Many of Barcelona’s best museums offer free entry once a month, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), Museu Picasso and Museu d’Història de Barcelona (MUHBA). Free museum days are usually on the first Sunday of each month, but some are always free, for example La Virreina Centre de la Imatge. May 18th, International Museum Day, is an occasion when many of the museums in Barcelona are free to enter, including some that do not otherwise offer a day of free entry each month.

The MNAC combines Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art collections along with collections from 19th and 20th century. Built in 1929, MNAC is housed in the Palau Nacional and offers impressive views over Plaça d’Espanya and the city center.

Admission is free every Saturday starting at 3pm and on the first Sunday of each month.

Palau Güell

The Palau Güell is a mansion designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí for the Catalan industrialist Eusebi Güell. The Palau is located in the El Raval neighbourhood just off La Rambla.

The Barcelona Maritime Museum is housed in the Barcelona Royal Shipyards (drassanes) in a building of well preserved Gothic architecture. Pictured above is a replica of the ornate Galera Reial  (Royal Galley), which was the flagship of the Christian fleet in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.

Montjuïc Castle

Montjuïc Castle is an old military fortress situated at the top of Montjuïc hill that traces its history back to 1640. During the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) both sides of the conflict imprisoned and executed political prisoners here. Lluís Companys, the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, was executed at Montjuïc Castle in 1940.

The MAC (Museu d’Arquelogia de Catalunya) was founded in 1932 and it is housed in a building on Montjuïc originally made for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. The museum covers prehistory, the Greek and Phoenician colonisations, the Roman Empire and the Visigoths. Among the treasures in the museum are the 3rd century BCE Greek statue of Asclepius and the Visigothic votive crown from Torredonjimeno.

El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria (CCM)

El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria (CCM)

The El Born CCM is housed in an 8,000 square meter iron and glass structure that was formerly the Mercat del Born, which opened in 1876. Following the discovery of the extensive ruins in 2002, the decision was made to preserve the site. The subterranean vestiges reveal the Barcelona of before and after the siege of 1713-1714, at the end of the War of Spanish Succession.

Finally, it is also possible to visit the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya, the assembly hall of the Parliament of Catalonia. The Catalan Parliament is one of the oldest in the world, with roots tracing back to the 11th century. The Palau del Parlament de Catalunya is situated in Parc de la Ciudadela and was built between 1717 and 1727 as an arsenal. You can schedule a free guided tour here.
