The Terminator films like the
Planet of the Apes movies inspired my
first Time-Rider story with the whole apocalyptic world idea.
It's a classic sci-fi scenario. The world has become a terrible
ungodly place of terror created usually by some great act of war or
nuclear devastation. The fun is in figuring out what went wrong, and
what kind of world is left. In the case of the Terminator the
machines have been aware of their own existence through the military
computer Skynet, and so decide to attack human kind and take over
the world. In the grim future of the Terminator machines in
cybernetic form hunt down and war against humans. The leader of the
resistance John Connor becomes number one on the machines list, and
so a Terminator played by
Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back to kill Connor's mother
before she even has Connor as a baby. A time paradox of sorts occurs
when one of the resistance fighters also goes back in time to save
Connor's mother Sarah Connor, and winds up being the baby's father.
The second Terminator has a
reprogrammed Terminator sent back by John Connor himself to save
himself as a young boy. In this sequel it appears as though
Judgement Day the end of civilization as we know it is averted. The
third once again has Arnold coming back for the third time, but this
time Judgment Day is inevitable.
