The Planet of the Apes has got to be one of my biggest inspirations in creating the Time-Rider series especially the first Time-Rider story arc starting in issue 1 featuring a post apocalyptic scene of destruction. For some reason those type of stories about future worlds gone wrong always intrigued me. Perhaps it's the mystery of finding out what caused the destruction, and what type of world is left behind that peaks my interest the most.

The first Planet of the Apes came out just a few years before I was born, but growing up I remember catching all of them on television. My favorites I suppose are the first one, and the third one Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Besides playing Moses the Planet of the Apes was probably one of Heston's most famous roles. Funny because it's been said that in the second one where his character ends up pulling a lever that destroys the entire planet, he really just wanted to end the movie franchises chance at a sequel. I guess those darn dirty apes were getting on his nerves so he thought the idea for the shocking ending.

Not surprising the Twilight Zone's Rod Serling was said to have come up with the first movie's shocking ending with Heston realizing he actually never left Earth, but landed in the far distant future. This is where Heston rants after seeing the Statue of Liberty half gone.

I just had to get an idea of what it would look like to have Time-Rider in the grim future of the Planet of the Apes. All I did was find a wallpaper of the famous Statue of Liberty scene and added the Time-Rider doing the Charlton Heston bit.

The kissing scene from the Planet of the Apes has to be the weirdest scene from all of the Apes movies. Just added Time-Rider for laughs.

The Planet of the Apes started a merchandising craze back in the 1970's, and not surprisingly had their own Marvel comic book series. If you'd like to read the whole first issue in pdf from check out this site. http://pota.goatley.com/ They've got images of comics, collectibles, coloring books, posters, and even some of the old TV show bubble gum cards.  Also on display is a comic I didn't know existed till browsing around for this article. It's a Gold Key comic book adaptation of the Beneath the Planet of the Apes movie.

There were also lunch boxes, action figures, and records for the Ape fan back in the day. The movie franchise spawned a animated and live action series on television. Although I think the series actually out did a few of the movies it couldn't beat Sanford and Son. So while still very cool it only lasted one season. That's what I read anyway, I don't remember what was on the other channel back then. I was just a little too young for detailed memories.
