Editorial Reviews:

It's all about the power chord and the sing-along chorus. With the exception of the stark title track, Christopher Carrabba's once-prominent acoustic strumming is now in short supply. Along with Scott Schoenbeck, John Lefler, and Mike Marsh, the Dashboard Confessional mastermind cranks it all up on his fourth full-length: the guitars, vocals, drums, the works. Consequently, some listeners have been tossing around the letter "U" and the numeral "2." It's a bit of a stretch, although the album was co-produced by Daniel Lanois of Joshua Tree fame (and mixed by Nevermind's Andy Wallace). The Florida outfit also opened for the Irish superstars in support of 2003’s A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar. That said, Carrabba is still the same earnest young man, just more amplified than before. Aside from "Dusk and Summer," quieter tracks include "Stolen" and the piano-driven "So Long, So Long," decorated with husky croons from Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows. But even these seem loud compared to Carrabba's stripped-down early material. It isn't a bad move, but like most stylistic shifts it's sure to send a few longtime fans packing, while making room for new ones who've never heard Dashboard Confessional before or who found the old stuff too whiny and angst-ridden. Well, there isn't much whining on Dusk and Summer--just a whole lotta (heartfelt) rockin'. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Comment: This CD is much better than reviews are giving it credit for. You will enjoy this CD. It has a little bit of everything and it is all done well.

Summary: Great emotion
Comment: I like this disc a lot. Never been a fan of Dashboard simply because I didn't know about them. Heard one of the songs from this album on an episode of Scrubs and loved it. Good, soul-stirring stuff. Get a copy if you still can.

Summary: Great Album
Comment: This album is a great addition to Dashboard's already stunning list of songs. This CD is full of great tunes like Don't Wait, Stolen, So Long So Long, Currents and Rooftops and Invitations. if you're a fan of this groups earlier stuff, this may not be the album for you, as for me I just love their lyrics and their sound.

Summary: I can't believe how much I like this album
Comment: I know that many people who have been fans of DC for many years think that this album is a bit too much of a departure for their tastes. I understand that. So because this album is what made me a fan, I suppose this review doesn't have much cred. However, for all the opinion of a new fan is worth, I think this album is fantastic.

I personally found most of DC's earlier work a little bland for my tastes. When I first heard "Vindicated" on the radio, I couldn't believe it was a DC song. That song was in my head non-stop. So I figured what the hey, let's get the whole CD. Holy guacomole, people, I can't believe how much I like this album.

"Don't Wait" is one of my favorites. It's melodic, yearning, and just harsh enough to be memorable. Other standouts are (of course) "Vindicated," "Stolen," and "Heaven Here," which builds slowly into an atmospheric gem of a song. A couple of the songs are a little subtle for my tastes. The title track is a bit on the forgettable side. I'm not much of a Counting Crows fan, so the Durtiz collaboration on "So Long, So Long" falls somewhat flat to me.

Overall, I think what makes this album memorable is also what makes it a work of art: it perfectly captures the essence of summer's end in the music, lyrics, and CC's vocal stylings. Softly fading sun that throws gold on the grass, warm days yielding to nights tinged with chill, and romances that must, like the summer heat itself, inevitably end.

Summary: Dusk and Summer
Comment: This CD is neither great nor horrible. Some great songs such as Don't Wait, Stolen, Rooftops and Invitations, and So Long, So Long make this CD worth getting because of the expressive vocals. The best song is by far So Long, So Long, which almost makes me cry. Most of the CD is just average songs like Reason to Believe and The Secret's in the Telling. Slow Decay is easily one of the worst songs that Dashboard has ever recorded. To sum it all up, most of the CD is average, there are a few really good songs, and a few horrible ones.
