If you follow all of the books which is considered the expanded universe then the movie would probably either follow the Emperor Reborn story line where he had cloned himself prior to his death so he could come back. Or it would show one of the other Imperial Warlords still out in the galaxy trying to destroy the alliance for killing their Emperor. Although they could go further into the future with the New Jedi Order where Luke establishes his Jedi Academy and starts training other force sensitives.
