Just finished Superboy Season One DVD set last night and I've added about a 181 images from the set to the gallery. Superboy Gallery
If you haven't seen the series ever or any a long time then you might be interested in my thoughts on the show.
I have a lot of mixed feelings. I really like the show, but I know a lot of the younger kids might automatically think of it as cheesy or whatever the new word is now. Honestly, I guess I can't say it's cool. It's just neat, really really neat.
First on its side is the costume. Here we have a syndicated show back in the 80's with a very limited budget but they managed to get the costume down perfectly. No raised insignia or extremely dark colors anywhere to be seen. Just a plain ordinary Superman costume.
Second for 70's and 80's TV fans there are a lot of guest stars, one almost every show including Ray Walston (Mr Han from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and My Favorite Martian) two seperate stars from Hawaii Five-0, one from Mission Impossible, Sonny Shroyer from the Dukes of Hazzard, and even Leaf Phoenix now known as Joaquin Phoenix the guy who played Johnny Cash in the very cool movie "Walk the Line"
Third although the flying scenes occassionally goofed as it went farther into the season the flying got very real. I think they started to rely a lot more on just wires and less on bluescreen which was smart for their limited budget.
Sure the acting isn't like Shakespearean play, but it's a good show in the respect it shows for the comic book from which it comes from.
Even comic book gurus Cary Bates and Dennis O'neil got into the act.
There are some really bad episodes and some really good ones. The best I thought was "Hollywood" where Superboy goes back in time to the 1930's. The style was very reminescant of the "Adventures of Superman" show with the gangsters, machine guns and the old bend the gun barrel routine. It was fun.
I really hope they come out with season two.
