first off, i dont understand why everyone loves this movie. it seems like everyone wants to like it so much that they force themselves to. and in tim's case (no offense), it sounds like he was so afraid of it stinking it up like superman IV that he forced himself to like it. and i'm speaking as someone that went in with mediocre expectaions.
i saw it in imax 3D so maybe i missed something, but the whole thing seemed lacking. kevin spacey delivered an excellent lex and routh even surprised me as being a decent superman. i even got over the costume changes. but my major point is, superman did not through one punch. also the attempt to make superman's flying effortless, just made most of it boring. for instance take a look at neo flying in the matrix trilogy. notice how the clouds suck in around him, and cars fly and its just awesome. superman didnt deliver that awesome feeling.
not only that, there was NO awesome quotes. what's a superhero movie without quotes. take a look at spiderman "with great power comes great responsibility" or batman's "it's not who you are inside, it's what you do that defines you." all superman gave us was a wimpy "oh, you'll see me around." lex seemed to be the only character that knew how to talk. everyone else was completely silent.
i found myself at times sighing, and when you sigh and look around at imax 3D, things aren't good. it often had slow scenes, and was completely unresolved in the end. lois doesnt get with clark, she's with a man she doesnt love who lets her dive in the water and heave a 215 pound man out of raging water.
also it took clark too long to reclaim the throne of superman and delivered fanboys absolutely zero comic book reference. they basicly took characters and made up a new story. i found myself thinking near the end, if superman doesnt throw one punch, i'll be disappointed. flying around just doesnt compete with spiderman's awesome mid air battles or batmans firce brawls or even the x-mens superpowered wars.
and the quick throw in of superman's unworthy death left me with severe side pains. the plot had potential but it didnt deliver. and clark kent seemed like a kid at the planet, compared to everyone around him for some reason he seemed more likely to marry someone jimmy's age than lois.
the movie felt like it was being told from lois's view not clark's. overall i have to see it again because i have no idea what made up 2 hours and 45 minutes of my life. also the lengthy flying with lois tribute to the first film was dull and overused. however i did like the plane scene. so if you're willing to spend 2 hours and 45 min. for a five minute sequence, see it. or if you aren't a real superman fan you MAY like it. though i thought it lackked the things that make a good movie. and it hurts because we're dealing with an iconic character, and it had potential in its plot, but didnt execute well. and dont go see this if you like a movie where the main character has more than five lines. i honestly thought brandon routh's name should've come about third in the credits. __________________"You...complete me."
