In a world that could have been but wasn’t John Dark Jr. was the only child of police chief Jonathon Dark Sr. In this world things progressed differently than they otherwise might have. In a multiverse where anything is possible, even the most improbable of realities can become the true course of events.
I will not bore you with the details of police chief Dark’s murder. For that happens in every version of reality. But here John Dark finds himself with no remaining family to lean on for support. He goes to his sensei at the S.K. Bay Area Dojo and requests more lethal forms of training. Oroko Shadou consents and the training begins. For months the two train together in secret after the normal martial arts lessons are over. However one of the other students during these ‘normal’ lessons catches John’s eye and the two begin dating. This woman is the heir to a military grade weapons research facility known as Sojourn. Her name, Alicia Martin the distant relation of a country boy turned hero from Shadow, TN.
As the couple became more and more involved John Dark revealed his darkest secret, a thirst for vengeance against those responsible for his father’s death. Though at first she did not agree with his plan she soon came to understand the deep conviction he held. Alicia began training with John and Master Shadou after hours in the more lethal arts until finally she and John were ready to begin their work. Using technology from her parents’ company, Alicia had specialized gloves created for them that house wrist blades. She also had masks and various other devices specially equipped for use in their nocturnal activities that were to come.
It is here that our story truly begins…
Over the next two years the couple clean up the streets of Saint Katherine’s Bay utilizing the vigilante identities of Shadow Hawk and Raptor until organized crime is all but a thing of the past. With only one major player left on the board they ready themselves for the final battle to come. The Russian crime boss known on the streets as Big Frankie tightens his grip on the city as his competition is all but forgotten.
“This is it my love, Big Frankie is definitely in there. I’ve been watching for three days and he has yet to leave” Raptor reports as Shadow Hawk swoops in to land beside her on the rooftop.
“Good work. Now I can finally take my revenge for the murder of my father.”
“We must be careful John. We can’t risk charging in without accounting for all his henchmen.”
“Don’t worry I have that covered” he replied as he activated a small remote that he pulled out of his belt pouch.
Soon a form could be seen running in the streets below towards the building where Big Frankie was holed up. The shadowy figure kicked down the door and rushed in. Soon shots could be heard as the gunmen inside opened fire.
“What was that?” Raptor asked with surprise.
“Just a little distraction I’ve been cooking up” Shadow Hawk answered with a smile “now that the guards are busy let’s go in through the roof, shall we?”
“Of course” Raptor smiled back with a wink.
“After you” Shadow Hawk said with a flourish of the hand.
Raptor smiled again “how gentlemanly of you” she said as she leapt from the rooftop and fired a grappling hook from her grapple gun.
Shadow Hawk followed suit and the two of them swung over to the building and crashed through an upper level window. Rolling with the momentum they both quickly came back up to their feet activating their wrist-blades in unison. Night-vision lenses flared to life in the darkness of the abandoned office space.
“Let’s make our way to the stairwell” Shadow Hawk whispered to his mate before moving towards the office door.
“No stop!” she shouted her body tensing as a shiver went down her spine.
“What?”
“I don’t know yet hang on a minute” Raptor said her breathing hard as she scanned the room until she found it “tripwire.”
Shadow Hawk followed her gaze to the foot of the door where a small metallic wire was stretched from one side to the other. The two of them back up to the far wall and pulled over a table for a makeshift barricade. Then at the same time they both throw a small bird shaped blade aiming for the tripwire.
The tripwire severed and triggered the explosives hidden around the doorframe. The detonation not only deafened anyone in the building but blew apart most of the top three floors. Shadow Hawk and Raptor found themselves falling down three or four floors before crashing against a solid surface. The two vigilantes find themselves surrounded by several armed gunmen.
“Damnit, ambush” Shadow Hawk swore.
“Guess we have to do this the hard way” Raptor grumbled.
“Yes, yes the dynamic duo, thorns in my side” a heavily accented voice spoke in passable English.
Shadow Hawk looked over that the large man standing behind the gunmen and spat out the name like it was poison “Big Frankie.”
“You thought your toy was going to fool me?” Big Frankie asked “tsk, tsk. I would think you know me better than that.”
Raptor threw one of the hawk-stars in an arc that caused it to disarm three of the gunmen as it angled around the room. Shadow Hawk roundhouse kicked another one who was close by knocking the pistol from his hand. Fast as lightning the two of them entered into a perfectly choreographed routine of punches and kicks until every one of the henchmen were down for the count.
A mocking clap filled the room “bravo, bravo” Big Frankie applauded “oh whatever will I do” he continued putting his hands to his face as if worried.
Suddenly ten more men burst into the room with fully automatic rifles in hand. The two vigilantes dove behind the cover of stone pillars just as they opened fire. This gave Big Frankie time to slip out of a side door.
Raptor and Shadow Hawk looked at each other faces grim and unspoken feelings passed between them. The love they shared strengthened their resolve. A plan formed in their minds and the instinctively knew what each other was thinking. Timing their movements each of them dove out from behind cover at precisely the same moment.
Throwing hawk stars, they dodged the bullets and dove behind more cover as the bird blades struck home wounding two of the shooters. The remaining eight hesitated wondering which one of them could be next. Then Shadow Hawk nodded to Raptor. She launched her grappler the gunmen on her left and watched as the claw latched onto his leg. Then she hit the retract button and yanked him off his feet.
While she had them distracted Shadow Hawk whipped out his remote again and activated his secret weapon once more. Slamming through the door the shadowy figure stabbed two of the henchmen through the back with katana sized blades. The two bodies dropped lifelessly to the floor causing their comrades to turn around and look.
Shadow Hawk and Raptor moved again charging in until they closed on the men rendering their rifles useless. They swiftly dispatched the remaining five men and went off in search of Big Frankie. Only to find the crime boss long gone. All searches prove fruitless and the two have to conclude the Russian fled the city.
Later that year a miracle happens, Alicia finds herself pregnant with a baby girl. She willfully hangs up her spandex to stay home and raise her child. John however refuses to leave his city unprotected. So he remains on the streets, his thirst for vengeance all but sated.
For the next fifteen years he keeps up his nightly vigil, for the Shadow Hawk will always be watching no matter what the cost. But during the day he takes on the role of loving husband and father. Providing for both his wife and their daughter Jessica, he watches his little girl grow into a young woman before his eyes. __________________
