General Westlake’s Office, Area 51…

“This is a priority one distress call from the Omega 3 please respond” an electronic speaker translated into perfect English from whatever alien language the call originated from.

Robbie Westlake was startled from his nap and almost fell out of his chair as the radio relayed the message. It took him a mere six seconds to realize where he was and who was speaking to him. He looked over at the radio in wonder. This channel was set up exclusively to monitor signals from outside the Milky Way galaxy. The General reached over and pressed the button on his desk intercom system and buzzed his secretary.

“Sam I need you to find Colonel Vanguard and get him in my office immediately.”

Samantha Norton accepted the task and made sure to reply “yes sir” before setting off to find the large black man named Luther Vanguard.

She didn’t have to go far to find the Colonel, he was at his usual spot in the cafeteria for his 4:15 a.m. breakfast and coffee. He looked up at her entrance and nodded for her to take the seat across the table from him. Then he went back to cutting up his egg whites with his fork and stuffing them into a flaky golden brown biscuit.

“What does he want this time?” the Colonel asked before taking a bite of his biscuit.

“I’m not sure but it sounds urgent. He wants you in his office ASAP.”

“The General thinks everything is urgent” Luther Vanguard replied “he expects me to fetch every time he tosses a bone.”

“Should I go back and tell him you aren’t coming?”

Colonel Vanguard sighed heavily and shook his head in the negative “no of course not. Let me just finish this last bite and I’ll be right behind you.”

The secretary nodded and got back up from the table. Then she walked back out of the cafeteria the way she had come in. Luther took another bite of his food and tossed the remains in the garbage can before picking up his coffee cup and following. It was way too early to deal with all the B.S. that comes from the General’s office and he knew this meant it was going to be a very long and trying day.

As he entered Westlake’s office he performed the required salute and waited until the General returned it before lowering his own arm. He stood as rigid as stone as he waited at the position of attention for Robbie Westlake to explain why he was summoned.

“Glad you could make it Colonel. Ad ease soldier go ahead and take a seat” Westlake motioned toward the chair by the left wall.

Luther sat down without a word and waited patiently. He knew how upset Westlake got when he was interrupted. It seemed as if the General was going to let him sit there indefinitely. But then Robbie pressed the playback button of his radio and turned up the volume. For a moment there was nothing but static but then a transmission began broadcasting.

“This is a priority one distress call from the Omega 3. We are under attack and in dire need of assistance. Our engines are gone. We have no weapons. Mass casualties and more wounded. It won’t be long until they begin boarding. Please help!”

Colonel Vanguard’s jaw dropped open in surprise. He had not been expecting this at all. He figured Westlake just had another menial task for him to accomplish. But this, this is what they had been training for. This was the reason they existed in the first place.

“It plays back on an endless loop” General Westlake said after a moment’s silence “any ideas?”

“Not off hand. But at least two alien races are in play one peaceful, one not so much.”

General Westlake rolls his eyes at the obvious before responding “that’s the best you got? Come on exactly why did the Pentagon think I needed you here?”

“There’s really not enough to go on from that message” Colonel Vanguard replied ignoring the last question “I’ll have the technicians triangulate the signal and see if they can pinpoint what galaxy it’s from. That should at least give us a place to start.”

“Then get to it” Westlake snapped dismissing him without another thought.

Luther Vanguard stood up and saluted then did an about face and exited the office. As soon as the door shut behind him he dropped his shoulders and entered a more casual stance. He gave Samantha Norton a tired smile as he walked by her desk but didn’t speak. Then he took the lift down one floor to the level which was filled with computer geeks from various different fields of study. The IT guy he was looking for was a shaggy guy named Freddie who looked like a stoner reject from the ‘70s.

“Freddie my man I need you to do something for me” Luther said in his most laid back voice.

“Anything for you dude” Freddie replied “what you need?”

“The radio in the General’s office received a signal from space about half an hour ago. I need you to locate its source.”

“Whoa really, E.T. is finally giving us a call?”

“It appears that way. Hey if you make this fast I’ll even hook you up with those delicious brownies you like so much” the Colonel bribed.

“I’m on it. I should have something for you in the next ten minutes.”

“I knew I could count on you” Luther Vanguard said clapping the other man on the back “I’ll be in my office, just come on up when you have something.”

Dude, I need a miracle to give me more time.

I'm trying to think of a way to start doing a panel a week or something just any kind of progress at all.

No rush I was just curious since I haven't seen anything new with Time Rider in a while. I thought that you might just have ended him.
