I keep reading this movie Avatar is breaking records, but my first impression from the commercial was just that it was like a real world runs into cartoon animation kind of thing. Kind of like Smurfs meet real humans like the cartoon characters and people on Roger Rabit. More like video game characters I suppose than cartoons. Anybody see it, like it?

I saw it...It was a little bit too long of a movie for me.

Good movie, but I agree it is a bit lonnnnnnng. Special effects of course were oustanding. Not really interested in seeing it again right away, but will probaly get the DVD in time. I'd definetly suggest paying the extra few bucks and see the 3D version. I'd say see it......jerod

are you guys kidding?

it was simply amazing revolutionizing the CG industry. while granted the hero legend gets slightly predictable - especially to us superhero fans it concept and world design are, dare I say it?  out of this world.

aside from Dark Knight it remains the only movie I've ever gone back to theaters to see.

Here's a quote from Ryan Sohmer, an online comic-writer, (who's one of the most level headed honest people I can think of while still being hilarious):

Last night, I finally caught James Cameron's much-hyped 3D enhanced film, Avatar. I went in with high expectations, and came out thoroughly entertained.

The story was well laid out, though predictable, the actors all did their jobs well and the message of the film was about as subtle as a Terminator driving a Truck through downtown. Still, aside from the obvious, what really struck me about Avatar was the incredible World Building that Cameron did.

Say what you will about the man, but damn is he ambitious in his projects.

From the Navi to the other inhabitants of the planet, from the plant life to the skyline, from the terrain to the mountains, the entire eco-system of Pandora was unique. Taking that along with the fact of how difficult it must have been to design all these individuals organisms that must co-exist, it's simply an astonishing feat.

The only other thing I'd like to mention, is that while I usually toss off 3D films as 'gimmicky' or 'a way to charge us more for films', it was well used in Avatar. Not overdone at all, but just the right balance. It definitely added to the film as a whole, and made Pandora that much more real to the audience.

Indeed, I recommend seeing the film.

I agree wholeheartedly.  Tim, go see it.  You will not be disappointed.

Well if me and my wife go see. I guess we'll try and hit the 3d version. Of course there's also Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks out too. With our budget there can be only one.

no point, i don't think any of them were worth seeing twice in theaters, at least when i could eventually buy them and watch them over and over

if you have to choose just 1, go with avatar.  Don't get me wrong, Sherlock Holmes was excellent, But it just can't compete with Avatar.

as for the chipmunk one...rent it.
