The number of heroes still standing against Chaos seemed to be dwindling fast. Captain Midnight, Luminary, Wraith, Arcanum, Raptor, Maiden, and a still recovering Voltage were all that stood between the alien and his revenge. Chaos may have lost his nova force but he still had strength enough to do battle with these titans.

“Avenger Corps regroup” Captain Midnight ordered “we need a plan.”

Arcanum summoned his magic and surrounded them all in a field of invisibility making them disappear from Chaos’ sight. He then summoned protective charms to shield Shadow Hawk and Rook as well since neither one was in any shape to move out of harm’s way. With these spells in place the heroes should have a few moments at least to come up with a plan of action.

“I’m not sure how much more help I can be” Voltage mentioned “the teleportation took more out of me than it should have.”

“I think I can boost your power” Arcanum said and grasped Voltage’s wrist while mumbling some words that appeared to be nothing but nonsense “there I have linked you to my magical reserves. That should give you some strength with which to fight.”

“That’s great and all but what do we do about Chaos?” Maiden asked “the last time fire did the trick but this time that doesn’t even seem to be of much help.”

Wraith activated his radar senses and scanned the area around Chaos. The creature seemed to be drawing energy from an external source. It took him a few moments to pick it out but realized with a shock that the creature was gaining strength from the very air around him.

“We need to cut off his oxygen supply” Wraith said “the air is what is fueling his power.”

“I can attempt to contain him in a dampening field” Arcanum thought out loud “sort of like last time but we need a more permanent solution for the long term.”

Chaos sensed their invisible presence and shattered the magic barrier with his fist. The enchantment shattered beneath its force and the team reappeared once more. Captain Midnight and Luminary both struck out with their fists connecting with the creature’s jaw. Wraith phased through Chaos’ body and fired off an energy blast from his rifle hoping to fry the entity’s insides.

Maiden’s small sidearm fired off its signature golden blast of energy and she hit her mark as it went into Chaos’ mouth causing the creature to choke. His lungs felt like they had been penetrated by one of Wraith’s energy blasts and he wheezed in pain. The air that fueled him was becoming harder and harder to filter. Voltage moved in with a thunderous punch to the alien’s stomach causing him to expel the rest of the air.

With labored breathing Chaos reached out with his one remaining hand and wrapped his fingers around Voltage’s own throat then he crushed the windpipe. As Voltage’s own breathing stopped he felt his power being tugged away by some unseen force. The connection between himself and Arcanum had yet to be severed. But it would not sustain his breathing for him.

Arcanum fired off a blast of hellfire in Chaos’ face and felt the surge of electricity enter his own body. Then he saw Voltage drop dead before him. His own magic seemed to have siphoned off Voltage’s power in the last instant. Arcanum had not expected such a side effect from one of his spells. The electrical energy flooded through his cybernetic arm causing it to change from bright silver to jet black while at the same time altering its internal workings. He wasn’t sure what this meant but he knew it would take him some time to discover what these new changes might bring with them.

Chaos fell beneath the constant onslaught of the team. His humanoid form shifted back to that of his real form. The black oily substance seeped into the ground where the heroes would be unable to follow. Chaos was furious but refused to admit defeat this time. He worked his way through the ground until he was far enough away to safely resurface.

From here he rested, letting the air regenerate his power. He slowly took on his humanoid form again and his missing arm re-grew itself. The nova force built back up inside him as well and he stood tall once more smiling at his triumphant return but then he saw several figures streaking towards him.

Captain Midnight and Luminary were both up in the sky moving straight towards him as Wraith, Raptor, and Maiden charged in from the ground. Energy blasts combined with explosive hawk-stars to slam into the Chaos’ body tearing away huge chunks of the still forming pseudo-flesh. The alien retaliated with his nova blasts which caught the team by surprise for they had thought it permanently gone.

Wraith phased his body allowing it to harmless pass through him. Raptor grabbed Maiden and fired off a grappler that caught a nearby tree pulling them safely out of the way. Captain Midnight threw his arms in front of his face as another nova blast lanced out towards him. His bracers took the blast but disintegrated under might of the nova force. Luminary caught him before he could fall to the ground and rocketed them both behind a rock wall that surrounded a nearby field for cover.

As the team kept Chaos’ attention thus Arcanum stealthily made his way around behind the creature. Then he began chanting a spell letting the magic slowly build up inside him to create the most powerful spell of holding that he had ever attempted. The wind blew up around him and the skies darkened as thunder and lightning made their entrance. Chaos looked up at the sky befuddled by this instantaneous storm.

“This is not over” Chaos roared “I will have my revenge!” with that he launched out another nova blast which found its mark in Maiden’s chest.

The blue skinned alien whose real name had been Lolita changed. Her skin turned dark purple and her hair fell out. Her own alien physiology was drastically altered by the nova blast until she became nothing more than dust.

Captain Midnight was furious as he watched his beloved die and he still felt the ebony energy flowing through him to increase his strength even though the bracers were gone. He couldn’t quite understand how that was possible but knew he still had the power to act. Leaping over the short wall he ran towards Chaos like a linebacker going in for a tackle. He slammed his shoulders into the alien and felt as if he just collided with an armored truck. This destabilized Chaos enough that Arcanum could then make his move.

At that moment a tornado began to touch down from the sky and encompass Chaos within. Slowly the whirlwind dug into the earth as well bringing slabs of rock swirling in the sky. As lightning struck the tornado it fused with Arcanum’s magic with embodied the tornadoes force. The power then went on to reshape the rock creating four flat polished walls, a roof, and a floor. Then the storm changed the stone into solid steel. As the tornado spun the metal pieces into position around Chaos the lightning welded them together creating a prison for the alien entity.

With no air to fuel his power Chaos screamed a silent scream as his fists pounded away at the metal cube that contained him. He continued to beat on the walls until his knuckles were raw and bleeding. Then he beat some more until he was too exhausted to continue. Chaos reverted back to his oily black form as his power slipped away.

Arcanum set the large steel cage down on the ground and then began shrinking it until it was no more than the size of a paperweight. He bent down and picked it up tossing it from one hand to the other as he studied his own handiwork. Then he slipped the cube into his jacket pocket.

On another note with this cleansing of characters should I change the name of Captain Midnight's team or should I leave it alone?
