He could feel his prey. He was closing the distance between them and it made his skin tingle with excitement. Vengeance was within his grasp. He would have to thank the dark mistress for giving him this opportunity. Oh yes he would thank her, with a bullet to the brain once he was finished here.
No one presumes to order him around. But he was grateful for the new lease on life that he had been given. Oh yes he was grateful. His next killing spree would let the world know that he had returned! It felt good to be back in Saint Katherine’s Bay. The home of his greatest enemy!
Marcus Deimus, the Greek, shoved the saloon style doors open and entered the bar. Several curious glances shot in his direction but upon seeing his rotting race they returned to their drinks. He smiled with the half of his mouth that was still attached to his own face and looked around for the man he expected to meet here.
A hand waved him over to a darkened corner booth. He moved slowly over and set himself down gingerly upon a seat. Then he clutched the half empty mug that was on the table in front of his host and drank greedily. The beer burned his throat on its way down.
“What do you want from me Deimus?”
“Information on Shadow Hawk, I’ve seen his true face and I need to find where he lives.”
“Whoa that’s a tall order. There are over 30,000 people in this city not counting the homeless population.”
“Like I said I’ve seen his face, besides I have a name as well. It is Dark.”
“Dark? Like the former police chief who was murdered?”
“Exactly, Shadow Hawk is his son. You’ve got until tomorrow evening to get me an address” the Greek says “we’ll meet back here. If you don’t have what I need, well the movies are right. We zombies like the taste of human brain.”
Sebastian and Jessica are enjoying a nice night at the movies. They sit as close to each other as possible within the confines of the uncomfortable seats. The newest superhero movie “Time-Rider IV: Wrath of the Huns” was playing across the big screen but the two of them only had eyes for each other. So instead of watching the best superhero movie to come out since “Johnny Rebel: In Search of Thor’s Hammer” they locked lips with a passion that neither had felt in a long time.
Meanwhile unknown to them a man wearing a stocking over his face was gearing up to rob the ticket counter. The man pulled a gun from inside his jacket pocket and shoved it through the ‘Plexiglas’ that separated him from the cashier. The plastic shattered and the gun barrel pushed into the woman’s forehead.
“Alright honey open all the registers and empty them into this back” the robber said handing over an unmarked gym bag.
As the woman complied she triggered a hidden button beneath the counter which sent an alarm to the manager’s office above the theater. This in turn prompted the manager to pick up a phone and call the police. Within two minutes three patrol cars arrived outside sirens wailing.
The commotion was not lost on the patrons inside the theater. The noise broke Sebastian and Jess’ lip lock and spurred them into action. They left the theater and made their way towards the main doors. Without costumes or weapons they would have to intervene as ordinary citizens.
The gunman swore as he saw the cops and grabbed the cashier by the neck pulling her in front him as a human shield. Then he backed into the building and bumped right into Sebastian King. This surprise caused him to let go of the cashier as he turned to face this other man.
Sebastian wrestled with him for the gun while Jessica herded the terrified woman out of harm’s way. Then the gun went off. The smell of gunpowder filled the room as drops of blood splattered onto the floor between the two men. Jess turned back towards the two with a look of horror on her face. For an instant she couldn’t be sure which of the two men had been shot.
But then Sebastian’s face went pale and he looked down at his chest to stare at a gaping hole. Blood oozed down the front of his shirt and he clutched at it with his hands trying to force the wound to stop bleeding. He fell to his knees as Jess rushed over to his side wrapping him in her arms while shouting for someone to call an ambulance.
The police officers outside had already radioed ahead when they heard the gunshot and were now rushing into the building to secure the gunman. He was so surprised by the shooting that he dropped his gun and had backed up flat against a wall staring at Sebastian in shock. He gave himself up willingly to the police and was placed in a car to be taken to the station.
Sebastian King was placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance moments later with Jessica Dark at his side tears streaming down her face.
Raptor and Shadow Boy were trapped inside the lower levels of Sojourn’s underground facility. Gray Mist had managed to capture both of them when they had sought to capture her. Now she would be rid of Alicia Martin at last albeit now she had to get rid of this teenaged sidekick as well.
Victor Heavy had no idea he was getting in the middle of a personal vendetta when he joined up with Raptor to take down this cyborg freak. But now he knew he was in over his head. He had been disarmed and was now tied to a support beam in some underground lab where his body might never be found. No he couldn’t think like that. He would escape somehow. This place would not become his tomb.
Loud explosions could be heard from several floors above and the entire complex shook. From the look on Gray Mist’s face this was not of her doing. Two robotic drones came rushing into the room ready to report to their commander.
“Mistress, Shadow Hawk has breached the outer security. Our forces are trying to hold him off but it seems he is really determined to rescue his friends.”
“He can’t be allowed to get this far” Gray Mist commanded “I have come too far to let his interference ruin my revenge yet again!”
“Yes mistress” the drones replied bowing low and then racing out the door.
“Your friend is becoming a real nuisance Alicia” Gray Mist said using Raptor’s real name.
“He will save us” Alicia replied with real conviction “there’s nothing you can do to stop him!”
“And when he gets here, he’s going to kick your big metal butt” Shadow Boy put in “and when I get free I’m gonna kick your butt too!”
“Ooh a tough guy huh? Well maybe I should cut you loose so that we can have some fun.”
“Go ahead” Shadow Boy snarled angrily “let me rip you a new one!”
“Calm down” Raptor says to him “don’t provoke her, you have no idea what she’s capable of.”
“Better do as she says Bird Boy” Gray Mist says smiling now.
Pieces of the robotic drones came crashing through the walls and door as Shadow Hawk jumped in after them. His blades were extended for battle and his gauntlets were clicking on empty from firing off too many explosive hawk-stars since he entered the building. Gray Mist looked at him in rage while the two captives looked at him with relief.
“Let ‘em go…Now!”
“Not on your life vigilante” Gray Mist replies as four thin metallic spider-like appendages extend from her back and curve around her body giving the resemblance of having six arms.
She struck out with all four spider limbs at once completely caging Shadow Hawk between them as the tips embedded in the wall behind him. Then she reached out with her own hand and clasped it around his throat where she began squeezing the life out of him.
Shadow Hawk retaliated by boxing her ears with his own hands which made her slacken her grip on his neck. He was still pinned by the other limbs however and would need to find a way out fast. He sliced at one of them with his wrist blade but could not quite cut through it. Instead he managed to move it slightly throwing her off balance. He kicked out at another one completing throwing her center of gravity off allowing him to slip out from them.
Then Shadow Hawk roundhouse kicked the cyborg in the face completely taking her by surprise. She fell backwards to within inches of where Shadow Boy was chained up. He wrapped his free legs around her holding her still as Shadow Hawk closed in. Gray Mist struggled against Shadow Boy’s legs but his grip was strong. By the time she managed to get loose Shadow Hawk was face to face with her.
As the vigilante stared the cyborg down he swiped once with his left blade severing the chain that held Shadow Boy. Then he head butted Gray Mist knocking her unconscious while giving him a massive headache. Shadow Boy went and untied Raptor and the three of them stood over her.
“What do we do with her?” Shadow Boy asked.
“Turn her over to the authorities” Shadow Hawk answered.
“But we can’t risk her escaping” Raptor countered.
“But killing her will not bring your mother back. Besides I hear that the Midnight Avenger Corps has built a holding facility for super criminals out in the Atlantic Ocean. It should hold her.” __________________
