John Dark and Alicia Martin arrived back to the Citadel at around 5:30 p.m. When they walk into the war room Sebastian and Jessica quickly scoot farther apart on the couch. The second or two glimpse John caught before they moved told him they had been sitting right next to each other, his sister’s head resting on Sebastian’s shoulder as they watched television.
He refrained from asking questions and instead went over to the armory to suit up. Alicia followed and grabbed the spare suit which had been upgraded, as promised by Sebastian, to mimic her old costume’s power of telekinesis. For some reason though Sebastian couldn’t quite get the sonic resonance projector working properly so it had been discarded completely.
“Where are you two going?” Jess asked “you’ve been gone all day.”
“Sorry about that” John said coming back in the room completely garbed in costume “I was tracking down some information on CyberTech Industries.”
Jessica Dark decided not to tell her brother about going up against his doppelganger or about the new vigilante Shadow Boy just yet. It looked as if he had enough on his mind just now. Instead she just smiled understandingly and went back to watching the romantic comedy on TV.
“You two need any help?” Sebastian asked because he knew it was expected of him to offer.
“No just keep communications lines open just in case we need backup” Alicia answered “or eyes in the sky.”
“No problem.”
This was the answer Sebastian had hoped for anyway. He wanted nothing more right now than to enjoy a nice quiet evening curled up on the couch with Jess. He wondered if John suspected anything. If he did he was playing it cool. Anyway Jess could make her own decisions now, after all she did just turn eighteen three months ago. Though he doubted John even noticed, he wasn’t even at her birthday party because he was out fighting crime.
Outside the citadel Alicia levitated both of them in a telekinetic field and floated them towards their destination “so are you really okay with those two getting cozy together?”
“What are you talking about, they’re just friends” John answers perplexed by this question.
“Are you blind or just completely absorbed in your own world? Your sister is a beautiful young woman who is now of legal age by the way. And those two are more than just friends.”
“Sebastian wouldn’t…I mean he’s my best friend there’s no way…” but John had seen the spark between them, he couldn’t deny it any longer no matter how much he wished otherwise “my baby sister is growing up” he says at last.
“I’m sure its fine” Alicia said reassuringly “your sister can take care of herself. Besides he’s your best friend, he knows how much you care about her. I’m sorry I brought it up, we need to focus on the mission right now.”
“No its okay, you’re right. They are both adults and can handle themselves. You’re right let’s stay on track here.”
Alicia set them down just outside of a construction site where they were building the new Sojourn Corporation Complex. From the satellite imagery they gathered it appeared that the underground levels were already complete. And she knew deep down that Victoria Vapor would already be working on something down there.
Victor Heavy had seen his idol floating across the city in some kind of energy bubble. Not sure what to make of this he followed from the street. Now he could clearly see that Shadow Hawk was not alone. He was with a woman but not the same one he met earlier today. No this one was older, closer to Shadow Hawk’s age. But her costume was the same as the other woman’s but with two slight differences, the color and she had a cape where as the younger one did not.
He pulled out his mask and hawk t-shirt from his backpack and put them on. Then he pulled out the white boots and gloves and pulled them on as well. Victor thought they might have need of his help so he decided to follow them to keep watch.
Raptor and Shadow Hawk had already entered the facility by the time Shadow Boy scaled the chain link fence that surrounded the site. He stopped momentarily at the door and listened for any out of place sounds. Then he plunged into the darkness beyond.
Shadow Hawk’s night vision flared to life as they entered the building he looked around to find the most direct route but was forced to turn around upon hearing Raptor bump into the wall “how do I work this mask?” she asked then.
“Here let me show you” he said taking her mask off and flipping the switch inside before placing it back over her head “you have to learn to flick it with your eyelids by opening and closing them rapidly.”
A few feet further on John heard the distinctive swishing sound of wrist blades being extended and glanced back at Alicia abruptly. She looked at him apologetically as she tried to figure out how to work the gauntlets she was now wearing.
“Maybe we should have practiced a bit before heading here” John said through the communicators in their masks.
“Agreed” she answered “and sorry I don’t know how I did it.”
“I’m just glad Sebastian took out the grappler and hawk-star launchers otherwise you might’ve shot me in the back” he said back jokingly.
Up ahead there was a bend in the hallway and voices could be heard around the corner. Both of them halted and listened carefully letting the sound enhancers in the masks pick up the soft sounds that their ears couldn’t quite make out.
The enhancers picked up the voices of Victoria Vapor and her African American henchman Barry “everything is ready to proceed mistress” the man said.
“Good Barry, we need him fully functional before we continue on.”
“We need to stop them before they finish whatever it is there doing” Raptor said through the communicator.
“Agreed” Shadow Hawk replied extending his wrist blades “let’s get the drop on them while we still can.”
The two of them rushed forward around the bend only to find it empty. Looking around Shadow Hawk saw it immediately. A ventilation shaft ran down the length of the wall with several openings at regular intervals.
“They must be in a room nearby the sound couldn’t have carried far” Raptor said upon seeing it.
Looking around there was only three doors leading off the main hallway “we can’t rush all three at once and their bound to hear the noise if we pick the wrong door” Shadow Hawk figured “so I’ll take the left and you take the right.”
“And I’ll take the middle” Shadow Boy said catching up to them finally.
“Who are you?” Shadow Hawk asked.
“Your biggest fan” Victor replied “and before you say it, I can take care of myself and it doesn’t appear you have another choice.”
“Then it’s settled” Raptor said readying herself to telekinetically shove the door in.
Shadow Hawk counted allowed for Shadow Boy’s benefit and on three they all struck out. Shadow Hawk and Boy both kicked as hard as they could while Raptor hit her door with mental force. All three doors went flying into their respective rooms with a loud metal crashing sound.
On the other side of one of the doors Victoria Vapor and Barry were caught by surprise. The door hit Barry square in the chest smashing him between it and the wall behind him. Victoria Vapor hit a button embedded in her wrist and parts of her flesh transfigured itself into metal changing her into her alter ego Gray Mist.
Raptor stepped into the room and struck out with another telekinetic blast but Gray Mist was ready for it. The cyborg surrounded herself with an energy barrier that absorbed the blast. This gave Raptor pause for a moment. If her telekinetic attacks were useless then she’d have to figure out another way to take down this robotic freak.
“Looks like you got a new suit” Gray Mist said eyeing her new duds “too bad I can counter all your moves.”
“Not all of them” Raptor said extending her wrist blades and swinging her left fist.
The blade connected with the cyborgs head damaging some of the internal circuitry and knocking her off her feet. Gray Mist stood up slowly, sparks shooting out of her right cheek, and her face contorted in rage. Then she swung her own fist at Raptor, hitting her square in the chest with crushing force.
The blow knocked Raptor backwards and would’ve caved n her ribs if it hadn’t been for the impact dampeners that Sebastian recently installed in all of their suits. But with the upgrades the most she should receive is a massive bruise.
Shadow Hawk and Shadow Boy came rushing through the doorway after realizing their own rooms were only full of storage crates. Gray Mist weighed her chances against the three of them and fled through a back door. Shadow Hawk ran to the door but it was had locked behind her. The door itself was reinforced steel and he doubted even Raptor’s telekinesis would dent it let alone tear it from its hinges. __________________
