Jessica Dark turns the T.V. on to Channel 36 (SKBN ‘The Nest’)…
“Just days after the destruction of Sojourn Corporation’s office complex it has been revealed that President Sylvia Martin and her daughter VP Alicia Martin were killed during the collapse. The company lawyer, Lance Silverman, has discovered a Will written in the Alicia’s own hand giving control of Sojourn over to former employee Victoria Vapor” news anchorwoman Gladys May reports.
“How did that psychopath convince everyone I was dead?” Alicia asks fuming from her seat on the couch.
“We’ll get it straightened out…somehow” John says laying a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“She will pay” Alicia confidently replies “even if I no longer have the Raptor Suit I will make her pay.”
Sebastian has an idea and he speaks it aloud “we have a spare Talon suit” he suggests “and I can even outfit it with some of the same tech you had in the Raptor suit.”
“It’s settled then” John says “you are now a permanent member of our little group here.”
Later that same day…
Victor Heavy is a fifteen year old pickpocket living in an abandoned subway tunnel underneath the city along with the rest of the street gang known as the Saint Katherine’s Stalkers. He’s lived on the street for the last six years and has learned to take care of himself. Victor has learned the street’s motto ‘kill or be killed’ from firsthand experience. It had been self defense and the other guy was three years older than Victor. That was when he met the Stalkers, they watch out for each other like family. Family was something Victor never truly had before.
After his mother’s death, his alcoholic father became more and more abusive until Victor finally had enough and ran away to the streets. That’s why he survives now on petty crime, just stealing enough to get by.
Victor has found his next mark. A pizza delivery man, no a boy, not much older than himself carries two large boxes into an apartment building. Victor waits by the front entrance planning to make his move once the delivery boy exits. After about ten minutes the pizza boy returns without the boxes. Victor makes like he is entering the building not paying attention to where he’s walking. He bumps the delivery boy slightly.
“Sorry” Victor apologizes with enough conviction to rival a Hollywood actor “didn’t mean to run into you.”
“Its okay” the delivery boy replies casually.
Victor watches until the pizza boy speeds away on his moped. Then he checks his take. Thirty-five dollars cash and an mp3 player.
“Score” he says to himself proudly “I just hope that sap has good taste in music.”
He positions the earbuds comfortably in his ears and turns on the player. Rock N Roll music blares to life as he steps out onto the street. His attention elsewhere causes him to walk out in front of an oncoming truck. The driver slams on the brakes and hits the horn. The vehicle starts sliding but not stopping.
Shadow Hawk swoops in and grabs Victor by the shirt collar with one hand while using the other to control his swing. He lands on the sidewalk and sets a startled Victor down.
“You should really watch where you step” Shadow Hawk says as he fires off another grappling cable to swing away.
“Oh” Victor replies looking around for the first time “yeah thanks.”
The teenage pickpocket from the street stands still for a few moments in awe of what had just transpired. The dark vigilante Shadow Hawk had just rescued him. Him, a common thief, a boy undeserving of kindness, a lost soul. He begins to rethink his life in this moment. Did he really belong with the Saint Katherine’s Stalkers? Or should he be doing something more with his life?
His decision made Victor’s next thoughts are of food “hmm I smell tacos” he says to himself clutching the money in his fist “I shouldn’t make life altering decisions on an empty stomach.” __________________
