Tony Stonecipher had his forensics guys’ double check the info Shadow Hawk had given him. It checked out. Thomas Frank’s DNA contained the L-Strand. He hadn’t seen anything like it since he still wore a uniform. When Tony was nothing but a rookie cop dreaming about making detective he encountered a street gang called the Were-Breed.
They had all been partially feral, able to take on a hybrid form of human and animal at will. The encounter left him in the hospital for a month. The scars on his right arm were constant reminders of the horrors he’d seen that day. He began to wonder if they had somehow been resurrected. Perhaps a new leader had risen from the ranks to form a new gang?
If the Were-Breed have returned then nowhere, no one in the city was safe. But someone had taken out the homeless man. True he had been in human form but still that meant someone was out there on the side of the normal people. He would have to track down this mysterious gunman and enlist his help. Maybe even bring in Shadow Hawk too. Tony hated the idea of working with vigilantes but this case would warrant such measures.
In the darkness…
A man, the man with the .44 Magnum Revolver, spotted his prey in Liberty Park. The full moon lit up the area well enough that his prey spotted him as well. The clock tower in the background gave off an eerie presence as the top floor glowed with a faint light. The were-beast, a woman this time, turned toward him and snarled. He half expected her to run but she didn’t. This one decided to fight.
The woman was half feline; from the orange fur and black stripes it appeared she was part tiger. That explained her willingness to fight instead of flee. This Tigress charged him, claws extended in attack position. She swiped out with her left and he dodged with an inhuman quickness. He came back with a roundhouse kick that caught her in the back.
She roared in fury and leapt on him slashing with both hands. He crossed his arms in front of his face to block letting his thick coat take most of the blow. But her claws still managed to slice through and draw blood from his arm. He kneed her in the stomach, forcing her off of him. Then he drew his revolver.
His first shot went wide. It cracked loudly for he hadn’t taken the time to put the silencer in place. The noise gave the Tigress pause. She sniffed the air and smelt the gunpowder upon the air. Then she turned and ran into the trees using them for cover.
Something small and metallic whizzed by his ear and struck a tree that the Tigress had just moved behind. A man in a black suit with a grayish-white cape dropped into view. This man wore a metallic bird symbol over his face and had blades extending from his wrists.
“Hold it right there gunman” Shadow Hawk said as the green lenses in his mask flared to life lighting up the entire park.
“I’ve got no time for this, she’s getting away” he shouted back!
“No she’s not; my associates are tracking her even now.”
“They won’t be able to stop her. She’s too strong and they are not prepared.”
“Okay” Shadow Hawk concedes “who are we chasing?”
“A Tigress, one of the were-beasts, I took out a fledgling wolf the other night. But this one is much more evolved, as are the others.”
“There are more of them?” Shadow Hawk asked worried.
“Yes, lots more all over the world in fact. I’ve been hunting them for the past seven years” the man replied.
Shadow Hawk activated his communicator and contacted Talon “be careful, she’s dangerous. Track but do not under any circumstances confront her, repeat keep your distance.”
“Understood” came Talon’s reply within his mask.
“Alright” Shadow Hawk said out loud to the gunman “we’re working together now whether we like it or not. So I guess introductions are in order, I’m Shadow Hawk and Saint Katherine’s Bay is my turf so we will do things my way.”
The other man extends his hand and replies “I am Darius Bludd, Were-Beast Hunter, and we’ll do things your way until your way becomes the wrong way.”
Shadow Hawk thought about belting the man but restrained himself. Then opening a link to Sebastian he gave his friend the name and description of the Were-Beast hunter. He wanted as much info on the man as he could get if they were going to be working together.
Inside the Citadel…
A flash of white light appeared and Time-Stream lay Alicia Martin down on a couch in the corner of the war room. Sebastian King had turned towards him, surprised by this intrusion. Then he saw Alicia’s unconscious body and relaxed a little. He recognized Raptor at once.
“What happened?”
“She was about to be murdered” Time-Stream replied “I was told to bring her here, that she would be safe.”
“She will” Sebastian replied “I’ll see to it.”
In another flash of white light Time-Stream was gone leaving Sebastian staring into empty space. He went over to Alicia to check her vitals and then he radioed John to let him know what just happened. Then he retrieved some medical supplies from a locked cabinet and went to work.
Caliber Street, just outside Liberty Park…
An elderly man is crossing the street. There is no traffic at this time of night and he feels safe enough doing so. Then out of a tree leaps the Tigress, claws out. She rakes them across his chest cutting through his flesh. He screams in agony as he falls to the pavement.
The bloodlust has taken her over completely. She sniffs the air searching for her next victim. That’s when she notices the young woman following her. She turns, her gaze halting Talon in her tracks. Then she notices another scent on the air. The man she had tangled with in the park was coming upon her as well. And another man, this one’s scent was similar to the young woman’s. There blood had to be related.
Shadow Hawk, Darius Bludd, and Talon surrounded the Tigress. She was trapped between them. Or so they thought. For she sensed another scent as well, her friend Cheetara was nearby. The other female were-cat charged down the street at lightning speed.
Talon was the first to spot this new were-beast. She fired off a hawk-star but it didn’t even slow her down. Cheetara leapt on her and slashed with her own claws. Talon blocked with her gauntlets and then extended her blades. The claws and the blades glanced off one another as the two women fought.
Darius leveled his revolver on Tigress daring her to move. Shadow Hawk watched his sister for a moment but she was holding her own. So he turned his attention back towards the Tigress and extended his own blades pointing toward her in a threatening manner.
Then a chilling wolf howl came from the distance and everyone froze. A silhouette could be seen at the top of Toll Hill, that of a werewolf. Shadow Hawk could not believe his eyes. These things couldn’t exist, could they?
“Our master calls” Cheetara snarled as she landed a well placed kick to Talon’s head.
Then she and Tigress took off towards the hill as fast as they could manage. Darius fired off several shots after them but each one seemed to miss. Police sirens could be heard coming up from the other end of the street. That’s when Shadow Hawk saw the unmarked car and its driver Tony Stonecipher.
