My new Shadow Hawk title, giving the Midnight Avengers Corps a rest for awhile and getting back to basics...

“Finally a lead” I thought to myself as I swung through the city heading back to the clock tower I call the Citadel.

I had been on the roof of the Saint Katherine’s Bay Police Station ease dropping as I tend to do every night now when the call came in. Of all things it came from the United Kingdom. A Duke or some such called saying he had just had a run in with a hit-man called the Greek. This assassin was actually gloating about murdering my father, former police chief of SKB. This Baron or was he a Count? Count sounds right; anyway he also discovered the Greek’s real name, Marcus Deimus.

I’ve already radioed ahead to Sebastian and he’s now running a check on the name to see what comes up. Hopefully I can find this SOBs location and exact my revenge. There’s no way I’m going to simply wrap this guy up for the authorities. Their sense of justice isn’t enough for this guy. No this matter deserves street justice as only I can dish out!

So focused as I am on this new line of thought I almost missed the screams coming from the alley below. I had to redirect my swing to come back around the building and halt my movements. Perching on a windowsill I activate my night vision to better penetrate the darkness below. There are five of them down there. Lowlifes with nothing better to do than try and rape a lone woman.

Then I see the woman strike out with a left hook. She catches the closest one on the jaw sending him reeling. She has the makings of boxer. I wonder for a moment whether she actually needs my help. But there’s no way she can take them all on alone.

Firing off a hawk-star from my gauntlet catches one of them in the back of the shoulder causing him to scream. And what a high pitched girlie scream it was too. I smile in satisfaction at his pain and confusion. Now he searches the sky trying to find me in the darkness. That’s when I dive off the ledge into a freefall.

My armored fist catches him on the nose. I hear the crunching sound of cartilage and I know it’s broken. Blood starts streaming down his face as he tries to take a swing at me. Luckily for him he can’t see to well for if he actually connects one of those it’ll just make me madder. I come up with my knee to his stomach causing him to expel all the air in his lungs as he doubles over in pain. Then I hit him with an uppercut decisively ending the fight.

By this time the other four have turned their attention to me and forgotten about the woman. Good, now I get to really have some fun. I hope she’s smart enough to run. I hear her heels clicking on the pavement as she flees down the sidewalk.

“Good girl” I whisper to myself as I block a baseball bat with my wrist blade.

Then I slice it in half before kicking him in the chest. He staggers backwards and another one charges me. This guy has a small switchblade knife. Can’t he see that my knives are bigger? This reminds me of that Crocodile Dundee movie. I mentally say “that’s not a knife, this is a knife” before clamping my gauntleted fingers around his wrist and twisting it enough to break bone.

He drops the knife and backs away clutching his wrist in his other hand. The guy with the broken bat and the other one still uninjured decide to have a go at me together. It seems almost comical to me as they trip over each other. These guys need more practice at teamwork. Both of them are on the ground now so I simply stomp down with my boot smashing first one face then the other into the concrete.

“Thanks for the workout guys” I say to them then I add “you better learn to fear the name Shadow Hawk, for next time I catch you doing something stupid you’ll get a one way ticket to the morgue!”

My grappling cable shoots forth from my left gauntlet. I hear it latch onto something near the top of the building and hit the retract button. It begins to wine as it reels itself in pulling me up through the air, my cape billowing out behind me giving the appearance of wings flapping through the air.

Finally I arrived back at the Citadel. Sebastian King already had the information I wanted up on the Sentinel’s screen for me when I arrived. My sister Jess was in their waiting on me as well. She seems angry about something so I stand in the doorway and wait for it.

“John I need you to sign this for those stupid @$$#% at school.”

The papers were tossed down on the conference table in front of me and I quickly scanned over them before responding “you got detention? What happened?”

“Nothing, the teacher’s a jerk” she said leaving it at that.

“Come on Jess, there’s got to be more to it than that. What did you do?”

“I just asked to go to the bathroom and he said no so I got up and went anyway.”

“Jess…”

“It’s that time okay? If I’d stayed in my seat I would have been extremely embarrassed when I got up to leave. And you know how cruel some of the kids are” she argued, her lips curled in a pout.

“Okay, okay I’ll sign the form. Try to be more tactful next time you need to…you know take care of girl business.”

She smiled at this and hugged me as if that’s all she really needed. I hugged back while thinking to myself, how do parents deal with these situations? Then I finally got her to break her grip and release me so that I could get back to work.

“Where is he?”

“Still in England” Sebastian answered “at least I can’t find any records of him leaving by plane, boat or even camera shots of him going through the Chunnel by automobile. So unless he swam across the channel he should still be in country.”

“Book me on the next flight out. I’ll have to leave the suit behind but I have to catch him.”

“I’ve already booked you a private jet that way you can take your suit without having to worry about going through security.”

“Thanks, you’re a genius.”

“That’s what it says on my college diploma.”

To be continued…

This takes place just after the last Rovers issue where Ethan McKnight, Count of Carrion calls the police in Saint Katherine's Bay to let them know of the info he just found out. And during the first few issues of the current Midnight Avengers Corps title.
