The Midnight Avenger Corps caught up with the mercenary called Bombshell after 4 hours of hunting. Wraith using his radar senses and Arcanum using his tracking spells together finally found Melanie Neidich across the Turkmenistan border. She had managed to track the Jihad Brotherhood down to a small village.
When the group arrived she was unleashing her radioactive energy blasts into the center of town laying waste to buildings and people alike. Women and children were screaming as they ran away from the village looking for cover. The Jihad Brotherhood retaliated with unrelenting rifle fire.
Wraith had found himself in this type of situation before. He quickly took charge of the team with Captain Midnight’s consent and started issuing orders to the others. He had Maiden and Coyote rounding up the civilians and getting them to safety. Then he, Voltage, and Arcanum took on the terrorists while Luminary and Captain Midnight tackled Bombshell.
Energy spat from Wraith’s rifle, lightning crackled from Voltage’s finger tips, and brimstone shot forth from Arcanum’s revolver. They may have been outnumbered but luck seemed to be on their side. The Jihad Brotherhood fell one after the other beneath the combined might of the heroes.
Meanwhile Luminary had caught Bombshell by surprise with a haymaker. But Bombshell retaliated with a radioactive punch that sent the other woman staggering. Captain Midnight was on her then with alternating punches. Bombshell wrapped her hands around his head and discharged a blast of radiation searing his face.
Captain Midnight fell back in pain as his mask melted away along with part of his hair. In his fury he unleashed a blast of ebony energy into the ground at Bombshell’s feet. This caused her to lose her footing allowing Luminary to deliver a kick to her face knocking her down.
This is not how Melanie pictured her revenge against the Brotherhood. It was all going wrong now. Why had these costumed heroes interfered in her business? She had to stop them from taking away her victory when it was so close within her grasp.
Arcanum used magic to tie up the remaining Jihad Brotherhood members while Voltage and Wraith rejoined the fight against Bombshell. After locking the remaining terrorists within a magical cage of fire he dusted his hands as if he had just finished some hard labor.
“That about does it. Maybe you guys should think about new jobs? I mean come on there were only three of us.”
“I think that’s about it Lolita” Coyote said as he ushered the last child into the makeshift fallout shelter they had found “let’s go join the party.”
Bombshell found herself surrounded by this accursed Avenger Corps once again. What was she to do now? Luminary was still eyeing her furiously like she was holding a personal grudge. But as far as she could remember, she’d never seen this heroine in her life.
“Okay blondie what did I do to you?” Melanie asked at length.
“You really don’t remember do you? Alright then, you killed my Uncle Tom! But of course you didn’t see me hiding in the closet watching did you? Then you robbed our house. You took something irreplaceable.”
“What was that?” Bombshell asked with venom in her voice.
“My mother’s necklace, the only thing I had left of my parents! I vowed to track you down and get it back. And now I have you within my reach!”
Bombshell smiled at this because now she knew what the girl was talking about. The raid of Sanguine was her last assignment with the Blood Agents. They robbed every house they could get into that day. In fact she still wore the necklace she had stolen from this little girl without knowing it. She reached up to her chest and fondled it beneath her shirt. Why had she kept it? There was nothing remarkable about its design, nothing that made it appear valuable.
Pulling the necklace out by its chain she laughed as Luminary’s face grew dark with rage “is this the necklace you are referring to little girl? If you want it, come and take it!”
Luminary lunged at that moment. Captain Midnight shouted for her to stop shouted that it was a trap. Luminary didn’t care. She’d waited a lifetime for this moment of revenge. As she closed in to wrap her fingers around the other’s throat a radioactive blast exploded in her face. The force of it threw her backwards. She had been blinded! She rubbed at her eyes trying to locate her foe by listening for her movements.
There was too much commotion. Her teammates were now shouting at Bombshell and unleashing their own attacks. She felt a hand pulling her back to her feet. It was a soft hand, the hand of a woman.
Then came Maiden’s voice in her ear “don’t worry I have you. Just relax I’ll fix your sight momentarily.”
“You can do that?”
“I can do a lot of things when I put my mind to it” she replied then reached out with her mind searching for the damage.
She found the Cornea’s damaged and began to repair them with her mind. It took a couple of minutes but she was finally successful. Luminary looked into her blue face and smiled. Then she turned her attention back to the battle.
The others had managed to subdue Bombshell. Arcanum encased her in a box of lead using magic. Coyote came over to Luminary and held out his hand. In it rested the necklace that had once belonged to her mother. Taking it in her own hand she began to cry.
“Thank you” she whispered at last. __________________
