The ink black, oily creature called Chaos stared at the pitiful group of human scum and smiled at their unease. Why were Earthlings drawn to the theatrical? Almost the entire lot of them was wearing costumes of some sort or other. Except the blue skinned one, he had come across her kind before. If his memory served him she was from the planet Kanya. This was interesting indeed for her species has not yet acquired space travel, so how was it she could be here?
“I said bow before your new master!”
Wraith fired off a blast of his energy rifle and watched as the inky black substance parted to allow the bolt to pass right through it, then he changed tactics and yelled “what have you done with Arcanum?”
Chaos allowed his oily surface to part revealing a fleshy face beneath it. The face of Seamus Flannigan, otherwise called Arcanum. Then he covered it over again and laughed at the shock on their faces.
“I needed a host from this planet in order to communicate with you” he said to them “ah but if my appearance distresses you so maybe this will better suit my needs.”
With that the inky liquid was absorbed into Arcanum’s skin. Then Seamus’ eyes glassed over and became solid black orbs resting in the eye sockets. The rest of his body took on an eerie dark tone; everything became slightly altered in appearance slightly skewed in shape, everything that is except his cybernetic left arm for whatever reason the creature called Chaos chose to leave it as it was.
Then a dark booming voice burst forth from Arcanum’s lips “does this form please you more? Or does it pain you to see your friend thus? No matter I rather like this host body and think I will keep it!”
“What do you want of us?” Captain Midnight asked at length in the most diplomatic voice he could muster.
“Complete obedience” Chaos roared “I am here to enslave you not debate things with you. I will have your unconditional surrender, NOW!!!”
Ink black tendrils shot forth from his chest and wrapped around Coyote, then more went out grabbing each and every one of them. The tendrils began to squeeze the breath from them. They began to squirm in his grasp, struggling to free their selves from this alien monstrosity.
The radiation emitting from Bombshell’s body seemed to pain Chaos somewhat as it grew stronger and he released his grip on her. Cheered by her good fortune Melanie turned and made a run for it.
The voice boomed again “no one escapes. You can run but your planet is doomed to fall before my might and I will get you in the end!”
Maiden allowed her body to dematerialize breaking free of the creature’s grasp. Wraith phased his own body accomplishing the same feat. This left Captain Midnight, Coyote, and Luminary struggling to break free.
Even with all his might, Captain Midnight could not force the tendrils to let him go and the way his arms were pinned at his side it was no use to try and fire off an ebony energy blast.
Luminary however did not have this problem. Thus far she had only exhibited in front of her teammates feats of super strength and flight but this was not all she could do. Her retinas flared orange and streams of fire shot forth from her eyes. The tiny precision beams burned through the tendrils holding Captain Midnight and Coyote first. Then she trained them on the tendrils that held her as well.
“It seems the creature is vulnerable to radiation and fire. We have to find a way to utilize this to our advantage” Luminary shouted to the others.
Captain Midnight spotted the hellfire revolver still resting in its holster hanging from Arcanum’s shoulders which gave him an idea “you four keep him distracted.”
Wraith took the lead and began firing relentlessly with his energy rifle. Maiden drew her sidearm and squeezed off a few rounds of her own. Chaos laughed at their futile efforts as his form altered its shape to dodge the blasts.
Luminary hit him with a few more heat blasts from her eyes causing him to scream in pain. Coyote caused his hatchets to burst into purple flames and he grappled with Chaos swiping at the creature with his weapons inflicting more and more pain upon the team’s foe.
While the alien creature was thus distracted Captain Midnight closed in and made a grab for the revolver. Chaos batted him aside with the cybernetic arm but not before the revolver came loose from the holster. Captain Midnight rolled in the sand trying to find his footing.
He managed at last and came up with the revolver trained on Chaos “everyone fall back now!”
As the Avenger Corps moved away from Chaos, Captain Midnight squeezed the trigger and watched in satisfaction as the hellfire revolver spat brimstone from its barrel. The fire engulfed Arcanum’s body and burned continuously for several minutes.
Chaos screamed in agony as the fire forced him to separate from his host body. Arcanum fell face first into the sand, his body suffering from second degree burns. The ink black liquid form of the alien remained engulfed by the flames and burned continuously due to its oily consistency. Chaos became an oil puddle in the sand, burning with no end in sight.
“Should we put the fire out?” asked Luminary.
“Bad idea” replied Coyote “then it could possibly take over another one of us.”
“Let me handle it” Arcanum startled them with his rough sounding voice “after all it was my body he abused.”
He summoned a small magical bubble to surround the oil fire. Then it floated straight up until it left the atmosphere. The bubble hardened as it hit the cold reaches of space creating a meteor like prison that would move aimlessly through the universe.
“Will that hold him?” Wraith asked.
“I’m not sure exactly how magic will react in space, but I pray that it does. You don’t want to know what it feels like to be taken over by a parasite” Arcanum replied solemnly.
“So, what now” Luminary asked “how do we track this Bombshell down again?”
“We’re not in the business of personal vendettas” Captain Midnight stated matter-of-factly “I don’t know what issues you have with that merc but we need to keep a clear head and work together if we are to stop her, understood?”
“Sure thing, you’re the boss.”
