After coming to the conclusion that his bracers meant for him to stay in 2009, Captain Midnight decided he’d make the best of it. The name of the aircraft carrier that he had found himself on at his arrival was further proof of this. It seemed ironic that he had fled the Avenger Corps only to arrive on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Avenger. Lolita and Cole set out to salvage what they could of the derelict vessel and turn its floating hull into a command center. It took them almost a month to finish the work on this floating fortress. Now they had a staging ground in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle from which they could embark on missions whenever there was need of them.
Captain Midnight then went to patrol the skies of America’s Eastern Seaboard. Five hours in he came across a peculiar sight. Orange and green energy blasted upward into the sky almost knocking him out of the air. Down on the ground stood a man in sorcerer garb shooting the energy out of his hands as he enthralled people with his hypnotic voice. He ordered his first two victims to throw themselves into the street in front of an oncoming bus.
As the bus hit them it skidded sideways and flipped over crashing into a gasoline tanker truck causing the two large vehicles to explode! Laughing at the destruction the sorcerer continued to order more and more people to put themselves in harms way.
“That’s right my pets you will all kill yourselves today in such a way as to cause utter chaos and confusion. This will teach the so called Great Ones to cast me out of their precious order. For no one opposes Ignis Fatuus, Master Sorcerer!”
An energy blast, as black as night, hit Fatuus in the back of the head sending him toppling forward off his small stage and into the gathering crowd. Captain Midnight landed upon the stage with such force as to cave it in. He then grabbed the sorcerer by the collar of his robe and lifted him off his feet.
“Who do you think you are?” Midnight roared in his face “you do not have the right to choose who lives and dies!”
Clutching at Captain Midnight’s wrist with his own hands, Ignis struggles to free himself. Finding his physical attempts futile he summons a small magical burst of energy that goes off in Cole’s face momentarily blinding him. This causes Captain Midnight’s hands to slacken as he buries his knuckles into his eyes rubbing them furiously trying to regain his sight.
Slipping free of his grasp, Ignis Fatuus recovers his voice and shouts “Swinedego I summon thee!”
A dark fog rolled in and a large pig faced demon emerged from its depths. The beast snorted a loud oinking noise as drool fell from its ivory tusks. As it stomped over to where its master stood the enthralled people remained still as they were crushed beneath its massive hooves. Captain Midnight regained his sight just in time to witness this atrocity.
He flew up into the air and went straight for the pig demons face with both fists stretched out before him. There was a loud cracking sound as he connected with his target. The beast fell backwards and into a line of cars parked along the street. Car alarms could be heard as crushed glass spewed forth in all directions.
“OIIIINNNKKK!!!!!!” came the squeal of Swinedego as the demon climbed back to his feet.
“Ah $#!&*” was Captain Midnight’s response as he watched the giant pig rip free a telephone pole and take a swing at him.
The pole connected with his ribs sending him flying backwards through the glass window of an Italian restaurant across the street. Cole Turner came down onto a table splitting it in two ruining the meal of the young couple who jumped out of their seats to avoid their pasta which was now airborne.
“Let me pay for your meal” Cole said to the couple while dropping a wad of cash on the table then turning to the other faces staring at him “everyone should probably take cover and keep your heads down just incase anything else comes flying in.”
With that Captain Midnight charged back outside and tackled the demon’s right ankle causing it to loose balance and fall once more. Then he set himself upon its chest and began pounding it in the face determined to make it stay down. The demon waved its arms trying to swat him free but Cole dodged these attacks with ease. Swinedego let out one last oink of pain before its body went limp.
Then the dark fog rolled in once more and claimed the body of the pig demon. It seemed to evaporate before Cole’s eyes leaving no trace of Swinedego other than the massive amount of destruction that was left in its wake.
Looking around for the sorcerer, Captain Midnight was not surprised to see that he used the distraction to escape. Luckily the civilians who remained alive were no longer under the sorcerer’s evil spell and could go on living their lives. But the death toll had to be near a hundred and Cole was determined to make the villain pay for every last one of them.
To this end he turned south and opened his mental link that he now shared with Lolita “meet me in Saint Katherine’s Bay; I need to see an old friend.” __________________
