BIG BLUE and ‘The Hunt’ Epilogue
Character Created by Neo Gonzales Story by Wayne Clayton
Blue slowly got to his feet, his body bruised and battered after the fight, but even now he felt the power trickling back into his frame. He walked rather than ran up towards the General and the Doctor to check on their condition. Only when he was sure all was well did he at last turn towards the scene of the battle. The blue smoke swirled around the living statue as it finally removed itself from the wreckage of the great white Cloven machine. Its single eye was now clear and bright and caught the sun as it turn towards the group sheltering at the foot of the valley walls under the etched stone.
With a measured step it moved towards them, graceful and elegant. Blue watched cautiously as it finally halted before them. Its full eight feet swaying to a stop as it began to raise its open palm in greeting. Blue mirrored the gesture hailing this strange new ally. Then it spoke, its cold gravely voice seemingly emanating from nowhere as it had no mouth with which to speak. Its tone was vacant of expression and yet full of resonance as it spoke in a tongue long since dead to the world of man.
Sam flashed a quick glance at the General.
“What did it say?”
But to his surprise Blue answered.
“It’s some form of Navaho I think, I can only catch some of the words meaning? He says the Earth, Sky and Water is childlike? That he is The Guard”
“The Guard against what?” asked Sam.
“The Guard against the Gods Revenge I think or Anger in times yet to come”
The Guard spoke again, this time even Sam heard the words of the stone man emerge from the ancient language into clear and unfaltering English. How he did not know.
“I sense Children of Earth the danger has past…for now. I must return to the earth to prepare for the End.”
And with that the turned and walked back up the valley towards the edge of the hole cut deep into the desert floor. As he stood at its fringe it looked up into the sky as if taking one last look of the beauty of the world before leaping into the dark void.
Then Blue the doctor and the General felt the ground shake as before their eyes the hole began to close up until no trace of its existence remained upon the valley floor.
“So Blue since when did you learn to speak Navaho?” mused the Doctor as they heard the sounds of helicopters approaching.
Blue began to explain about the Army using Navaho as means to transmit secret information across open airwaves but in truth Sam wasn’t listening he caught the look in the Generals eye. The look which seem to say “If you so much as breath a word to Blue about what I was planning to do to him then I will personally make your life a living hell” or it may of just been his imagination. Either way he decided to play it safe and leave everything he had seen behind him in the desert along with the rocks and the sand as if nothing had ever happened.
Big Blue will be taking a break but Johnny Reb is coming soon.
