Here is number 2 of my 1 shots depicting Wraith's brief encounter with a new villain!

Just trying to get back to the normal hero vs villain 1 issue story.

“Well, well, well our escapee has finally shown himself” Director Robbie Westlake muses as he stares at the television and watches Wraith battling with others against an alien threat.

Activating the intercom system on the edge of his stainless steel desk the CIA director speaks gruffly to his secretary on the other end “Edna, get me the files on the Powerhouse Project.”

Westlake begins drumming his fingers on his desk as he waits impatiently for the files to arrive. He was about to lose his temper when his office door swung open to reveal a little old lady struggling with a very thick and heavy looking pile of folders. She didn’t so much as place the files on his desk as she did dropping them with a loud thud that resounded against the walls of the room.

“What took so long?” he demanded.

“Sorry sir, I walked all the way to the filing room only to have forgotten my key card back at my desk. Then it took me a few minutes to find the right cabinet that the files were in” Edna said sheepishly turning away from her boss to sulk back to her desk outside his door.

He glared daggers at her back as she pulled the door closed behind her “when am I going to get some decent help around here?” he asked himself before thumbing through the files on his desk.

His anger wasn’t only the result of Corey Wraithe’s escape from the facility in Night Haven. It was also due to the fact that the Pentagon was breathing down his neck to get the test subject back so that the “Enhanced Soldier” project could get back on track. That is why he started the Powerhouse Project as well.

“Hmm, good” Robbie says scratching his chin “it looks as if this project is ahead of schedule. The prototype power armor is already completed. Looks like those sorry excuses for scientists want to test it before sending it out in the field. No, no that won’t do. I have to deploy it now!” with that he slammed his fist on the desk.

Then he picked up his phone and dialed the extension that would take him into the laboratory “Dr. Snyder? Why are you wasting my time with test runs on this prototype?” he waved away the excuse with his hand though no one else in the office was there to see it “don’t give me that drivel. I want it in the field now! I have the perfect man to test it. He can be here in an hour. Have it ready then or you’re fired!”

Director Westlake slams the phone down in irritation then turns back to the files. A smile creeps across his face as he looks over the technical specs of the weapon systems. Soon he will have the sorry ingrate back in one of his secret facilities to finish testing. It was now only a matter of time.

Later…

“I should’ve known there’d be consequences” Wraith grumbled to himself as he dodged an energy blast from above.

He returned fire with his large rifle and smiled as the energy bolt lanced toward its target. His smile turned into a frown as he saw it dissipate just inches from the target’s chest. His assailant was protected by some sort of energy barrier.

“I smell Director Westlake all over this situation” Corey Wraithe thought to himself as he dove left to dodge another blast.

His radar senses had determined the energy being used by the armored mercenary was containment energy just from the smell alone. Wraith knew it would be futile to attempt to phase through one of those blasts. He quickly unclipped a small canister from his belt and tossed it upward. The bright light of the flash momentarily blinded his pursuer.

Leaping into the air he levitated up and over the hovering armored man “who are you?”

The armored man’s helmet sensors still offline could not see but still he remained in charge of his wits “you may call me Jackhammer” he said firing off another energy blast in the direction of the voice.

Wraith dodged in mid-air and came in close throwing a right hook. His fist was stopped short by the energy barrier which pushed back with enough force to crush a small car. Luckily Corey Wraithe managed to partially phase at the last second allowing most of the force to pass through him. The rest of it sent him flying backwards into a billboard.

“Westlake thought of everything” Wraith complained to himself as he tried to stand back up.

Jackhammer hovered over him now, palms out in front, powering up his next energy blast. Just as he fired his containment energy Wraith phased through the billboard letting it take the blast for him. Then he dropped through the roof of the building that was holding it up. Then he broke into a run heading for a staircase. Corey was hoping the dilemma of getting inside the building would halt the hunter long enough for him to work out a plan.

He was wrong! Jackhammer simply blasted a hole in the ceiling and dropped in. He caught a glimpse of Wraith running down the stairs and blasted another hole this time in the floor so that he could drop down to the next floor and cut off his prey.

As he came through the floor something latched onto his leg and yanked down on him hard. The weight of the armor aided this unforeseen force and slammed him into the floor. The impact caused his flight systems to go offline and have to reboot. He looked up and into the face of a smiling Corey Wraithe.

“Weren’t expecting me to phase through your energy field huh? Maybe Westlake should’ve made that barrier out of containment energy too, for your sake.”

Then he smashed the butt end of his rifle into Jackhammer’s helmet knocking the man unconscious. Without waiting for the man to recover Wraith levitated up and out of the building through the newly made holes. Then he disappeared into a thick cloud and turned his course to parts unknown.

I'm not sure it was a wise idea for Wraith to actually tell the bad guy how to improve his suit so he can stop him next time.

yeah I know, I thought of that after I posted it. But I was going to have Westlake notice the flaw after Jackhammer's failure and improve the suit anyway.

Wraith must've made the mistake of saying what he was thinking without realizing it
