Seamus Flannigan and Ethan McKnight sit around the hospital bedside of their recent comrade Billy Badlands. The Navajo warrior was in a deep coma that the doctor’s said he man never come out of. His body was as still as in death which troubled the duo by his bed even more.

“I shouldn’t have ever sent him after the beast alone” Seamus berated himself while staring at the blinking and beeping monitors.

“You couldn’t have known what would happen” Ethan consoled “you were only thinking of the greater good. We had to stop them from reaching their objectives no matter the cost. I know that is what Gabriel Jones was thinking when he was trying to distract the cloven beast to keep it away from the civilian populace.”

“You’re right of course” Seamus replied “however I can’t help but wonder if I had chased down the beast and left Billy with you if things would have been different?”

As if by magic the whole room suddenly went silent. Everything froze as it was except for Ethan. He grew concerned by this but was somehow unafraid. Then a blinding white light engulfed the room as a figure floated down from above on wings of silver. This new addition arrived quickly with a ring of gold above his head.

“It is good that you took up the sword of your fallen companion” the stranger said “for now it falls upon you to find it a new home.”

“What do you mean? I was going to lock it away in the armory of my ancestral home in a place of honor for Gabriel.”

“Fret not for Gabriel Jones. He knew it was his destiny to perish to save mankind. But his sword and yours are part of the Trinity of Light. No one person is capable of wielding all three swords at any one time.”

“But…” Ethan began to protest and then something the angel said stopped him “what do you mean three swords?”

“There is a third holy sword on this Earth in the hands of Luke Martin, better known as Seven, but it would not be wise to seek it out. As I said no one person should wield them all for it would drive them mad with power. It is very rare that anyone can wield two swords at once without some devastating effect.”

“But I wielded both to finish off the Cloven” Ethan did protest this time.

“I know that is why I said rare and not impossible. But you should not try and use both swords again for it could be disastrous.”

“So what would you have me do?”

“The sword will choose its possessor. You only need to get it close. So a quest will be undertaken. I suggest you travel back to your ancestral home and start the search in Europe.”

With that said the angel departed and everything went back to normal. Seamus continued talking as if nothing unusual had happened until he saw the puzzled look on Ethan’s face.

“What’s wrong?”

“You mean you didn’t notice at all?”

“Notice what?”

Ethan told Seamus everything that was said by the angel that had somehow frozen time. He could tell Seamus didn’t fully believe it but he didn’t dispute what Ethan claims to have seen. He let the knight finish before he stood up from his chair.

“If you feel that what you saw was real then you should do as the angel says” and with that Seamus Flannigan left the room.

Meanwhile in a deep dark hole, Billy struggled against his cage. Someone or something had managed to lock him up without his knowledge. He looked around for any signs of his captors but could see nothing in the darkness. Then he tried to call out to his spirit animal, the brave and fierce coyote, but to no avail.

“What manner of trickery is this? How did I get here and what has become of my guide?”

Then he heard voices far off in the distance. He could not make them out but they seemed to be coming from above him. The cage was now gone and he was on a rock floor. Someone must be using magic on him. What other explanation could there be?

“Fear not my son…you are not alone even though I am gone.”

Billy recognized that voice as the one of his spirit animal “where are you?”

“I am in another place. One from which I cannot return. But you must heed my words. You are not anyone’s captive for I have prevented that. You are only trapped in your own mind. You must use your Navajo training to find your way out and rejoin the land of the living before it is too late.”
