BIG BLUE and ‘The Hunt’ chapter 2..
Character Created by Neo Gonzales Story by Wayne Clayton
In the make shift war room General Layton was uneasy. The satellite links were streaming in the latest images from around the country and it didn’t look pretty. Fires blazed in the urban sprawls of Sun City and Boreas wasn’t fairing much better. Thankfully the Costumes on hand had managed to keep the Cloven occupied and even taken a few down. But not without losses it seemed. But the General was more concerned that his link with Blue had turned to static, and news that the enemy were now targeting nuclear facilities didn’t bode well. Especially as Big Blue was a walking power station in his own right.
The thought had occurred to him that these creatures could detect sources of Atomic power. If so why hadn’t they just zeroed in on Big Blue out in the desert? Why did they make a beeline to a pile of rocks out in the valleys? What else were they after?
“I want a Gunship waiting outside 5 minutes ago solider” He barked at the closest uniform. “Doctor your coming with me; I’ve got a bad feeling about this”
Sam suddenly found himself helped into a flack jacket by the Generals aids and then strapped into the back sit of a Black Hawk. It seemed the General was determined to get both himself and Sam killed. It wasn’t enough to blow him up with an atomic bomb and shot at by a deranged sniper, now he wanted Sam to take on soul stealing aliens with nothing more then a hard hat and a pocket full of pain killers. Some day this was turning out to be.
Blue watched in horror as the walls of the valley began to fade around him, replaced by the white glow of a crackling ball of light which sprang from the aliens forked weapon. Within seconds he had found himself engulfed and helpless. Although still conscious he was now paralysed as if his mind had been severed from his body. Through the haze he could almost see himself trapped, floating weightless within, caught in limbo between two worlds.
He’s senses began to reel as they suddenly were invaded by a chorus of wild screams of men, women and children, both human and not so human. But their lament was as one voice, a cry for help and for mercy. Blue found himself powerless, watching himself been carried at arms length by two Cloven abominations. Their weapons acting as one to keep him imprisoned within their spheres of light.
Their dark shadows swept up the Valley of Fire towards its terminus and the rock strewn hollow known as Mouse’s Tank. Where once a man called Mouse had made his home and evaded the white mans soldiers long ago. Now it seemed barren save for the thin trickle of water which bubbled at its heart under the hot sun.
Once there they stopped, motionless. Then as one they began their eerie call.
“CLLOOOOOOVVVVVAAAAAANNNNNNN”
Within his prison Blue felt the vibrations of their cry and then within his head he heard the deafening wail of a third unearthly voice, one deep and ancient rising up from beneath the hollow pit. Something was down there.
Looking down he saw himself being held over the hollow, his body now was beginning to glow with the green light of the energy within him. But he was not in control of it, they were. As the power increased the heat from his body was suddenly focused down into the pit, and he could see the rock itself begin to melt below. Blue realised at once that this was why they had come to this spot. Something was buried deep below the surface. The reason he was still alive and not another lost soul was because they needed his power to cut into the earth and release whatever it was that was down there. He had to stop them but how?
Within the wails of the demons Blue began to hear what seemed to be distant echo of a man’s voice shouting over the roar of the machines. He seemed to be talking to himself. Slowly the words grew louder in Blues mind until finally he could hear fragments of what was been said.
“When the time comes you will know….he who wields the burning … has need of you….”
Blue didn’t know who spoke the words but he was aware that whoever it was he was like him trapped within the Cloven web, but unlike those who he had heard crying for help this voice was still and calm, as if in prayer. Maybe that was the key to escape. If Blue could focus his thoughts on one act he could break free of his prison.
There was only one act he knew of which would succeed, regardless of the so called ‘civilians’ out there in the valley he had to follow the instructions lay down for him back in 1945. And complete his mission.
In the helicopter Sam looked out over the blur that was the desert floor. His pulse was racing like it had never done before. Looking over at the General he saw the old man gripping his shoulder with one hand and the hand rail with the other as he hung on the ledge staring ahead, the wind blowing in his greying hair.
Suddenly he caught a flash of blinding light from the corner of his eye. Turning he saw a big blue ball of fire expanding across the desert like a new born sun.
