Prepare yourselves for the final battle of good vs evil!!!
“Alright troops” Captain Midnight shouts above the chaos “we need to light these beasts up with as much firepower as we can muster! Once their techno-organic bodies get hot enough we should be able to plow right through them.”
Everyone began putting as much distance between themselves and the cloven beasts as possible while Wraith and Captain Midnight opened fire at maximum power on one of the beasts. Within moments it began glowing orange then white. Its body appeared to be melting and that’s when the rest of the team struck!
Shadow Hawk and General Vanguard close in with their wrist blades while Hyde throws his whole body into the creature’s right leg causing it to detach at the knee. The beast lost its balance as it found itself crippled. Ghost opened fire then glad to see his bullets finally able to penetrate the domed head. Voltage charged up his fists and unleashed a devastating thunder punch that sent the creature reeling. Shadow Hawk carved into the creature’s torso ripping apart wiring and organs as he did so with a wild look in his eyes as bloodlust overtook his senses.
General Luther Vanguard hesitated for a moment as he saw the costumed heroes tackling the beast as one. He admired them as a group for they reminded him of his time in the trenches fighting alongside other soldiers. Then he shook away the memories and struck into the beast’s neck trying to cut away the domed head completely.
All of this happened in mere seconds. While the team was thus engaged Captain Midnight and Wraith kept the other behemoths busy using hit and run tactics with their energy blasts. One of the creatures however caught onto the ploy and broke off the engagement and turned his attention towards his fallen companion. He brought his tuning fork to bear and unleashed the soul stealing energy contained within.
Ghost was the first to see the blast coming towards them and he shouted out in warning to the others “incoming!”
Hyde grabbed the dismembered leg and held it out in front of him like a shield as the energy struck. The leg absorbed the energy and disintegrated. Hyde considered this for a moment as he leapt to safety. Why would the beasts on weapon destroy it? Could it be attuned specifically toward the human species? If so maybe the weapon had to be adjusted each time they went after new prey so that it could harvest souls instead of obliterating them altogether?
He had a plan, using his massive strength Hyde lifted the fallen beast’s weapon and turned it toward the attacker. Now he had to figure out how to activate it. There were no switches of any kind to be seen. He ran his green hands up and down the handle searching for a hidden switch but there were none to be found.
At that instant the Shadow Jet returned from delivering the President to safety. Talon let fire several rockets into the beasts sending the remaining three staggering. At that moment the communicator in the jet crackled to life.
“Talon, switch the weapons over to flamethrowers” Shadow Hawk explained “we need to heat them up to extreme temperatures to penetrate their natural armor.”
Doing as she was told, Talon toggles the switch and squeezes the trigger on the joystick. Fire lances out from the nose of the jet, engulfing one of the huge beasts. Its body immediately began to glow allowing the others to rip it to shreds in seconds. But then one of the others sent forth a blast from its weapon that destroyed one of the Shadow Jet’s engines sending it spiraling out of control.
Talon tried to stop the spin but the controls were frozen in place. The jet was headed straight toward the Washington Monument. At the last possible moment she hit the ejector switch sending her seat flying up out of the plane. Jess watched as it slammed into the monument, destroying the sacred landmark. After the destruction of the White House this was too much for her. As her parachute opened tears streamed down her face, Jess was beginning to think she wasn’t cut out for this stuff after all.
Hyde finally found the switch on the alien weapon and let loose a blast of energy into the back of the creature that just brought down the Shadow Jet. The creature roared in fury as a big whole was made in its torso. But it managed to remain standing. Before Hyde could get off another blast the other beast stepped down on the weapon with its cloven hoof crushing it.
Then the beast brought its own weapon around and launched forth a blast of energy meant to take out Ghost. As the vigilante’s back was turned he had no idea the danger he was in. Seeing this Luther Vanguard flung himself into the path of the energy allowing it to strike him instead. He felt at ease when the energy latched onto his soul as if he had accomplished what he was put on this Earth to do and he was ready to go. The masked vigilante turned around in time to see Luther’s body go limp and fall to the ground.
He opened fire with his pistols in fury. The beast returned fire with his fork and Ghost rolled out of the way while squeezing the trigger in a continuous rhythm. Wraith was there with him now lighting the beast up with his energy rifle. At the moment the creature began to glow Hyde yanked at the creature’s swinging arm pulling it free. Using it as a club he smashed in the creature’s domed head with it over and over again until the beast finally lay without moving.
This finally left the last beast, the one with the big hole in it, to be dealt with. At the loss of his friend and mentor General Vanguard, Wraith seemed to lose all self control and began firing wildly. The others had to move out of the way of his blasts to make sure they didn’t get destroyed as well.
Captain Midnight dialed up his bracers mentally switching his power over to his surge ability, one which he hadn’t dared use since his encounter with Superion. He figured if anytime was the right one to try it again this would be it. Without waiting for the beast to glow, he moved in close swinging one fist after another pushing the creature backwards while also taking stray shots from Wraith’s attack. His temporary invulnerability kept him well protected even though he could feel the impact against his body, it did not damage.
Climbing up the beast he secured a place on the creature’s massive shoulders. Then he wrapped his hands around the domed head just as the creature began to glow. Yanking straight upwards with all his might, Captain Midnight pulled the head free in a shower of sparks and bodily fluids. At the sight of this pure rage the other heroes stopped in their tracks and watched as the creature’s life was extinguished.
Epilogue…
He awoke to find himself face down in the dirt covered in his own blood. It was painful for him to move but he managed to sit up at last. Rubbing his eyes in disbelief he stared at the towering metropolis in front of him. Flying cars zoomed past him at speeds he’d have never believed possible. This must be a dream he thought still not sure where he was or how he got here.
Then the memories flooded back to him. He remembered getting into the ferromagnetic vessel and powering it up as the electromagnetic conductors buzzed to life outside. The whole experiment seemed crazy to him but he was just the test pilot after all, not the genius behind the whole time travel theory. He was a U.S. Army Officer, a soldier at heart who would follow his orders without question as long as they didn’t seem completely absurd.
Captain Cole Turner remembered the vessel slowly moving skyward gaining speed and altitude. Then the conductors exploded ripping apart the vessel. He felt heat and then nothing at all until now. Was it possible he really was propelled into the future? Or did he just knock his head on something and this was all just some sort of hallucination?
Looking down at his body he found it scorched from the fire of the explosion. He shouldn’t have survived that. He managed to pull himself up to his feet just as a motorcycle hovered into view with sirens blazing. A man in a dark greenish grey uniform stepped down pulling his helmet off his head. The glowing crimson red bracers he wore upon his wrists seemed to emit an alien power that dared anyone to try and run from this man.
“What the hell happened to you?” the man demanded with authority in his voice.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you” Cole Turner replied “what is this place?”
The man in uniform looked at him curiously as if he thought Cole was some kind of crazy person to ask such questions. But then he answered him as if he had rehearsed the speech over and over again in front of his mirror.
“You are now within the limits of Midnight City. I am Officer Remus Vel’Kar of the 3rd Precinct Avenger Corps.”
“What year is this?” Cole heard himself ask realizing this would make him sound even crazier.
“You’re joking right? Everyone knows it is 3155 A.D.” __________________
