Just 5 miles west of Boreas City…
“What are those behemoths up to?” Coyote wondered aloud as he traveled west on the trail of the cloven beast who had left the city.
“Soul collecting” came the voice inside his head that belonged to his spirit guide “they need to absorb souls to thrive.”
“Then why would it leave the city? It is heading toward the middle of nowhere.”
“It is not here for souls, the fact that there are so many souls to feed on is just a bonus.”
“Then what are they after?” Coyote asked tiring of this conversation already.
“They are after technology. From what I can gather from the other spirits their primary targets seem to be government facilities.”
“But there is nothing near Boreas City worth targeting is there?”
“Just north of the city is a nuclear reactor that helps power the eastern seaboard.”
“So that’s what the other beast was after. Hopefully the guys can keep it contained. And this one is after?”
“Top secret missile silo” the spirit guide said at last.
“That could be bad” Coyote replied as he saw the beast top the horizon.
He flipped the Nitrous switch and held onto the handlebars tight as the motorcycle shot forward leaving a trail of fire in its wake. As he topped the next rise his bike went airborne. He grabbed his hatchets and threw himself off of the bike as it slammed into the beast’s back and exploded!
Coyote rolled as he hit the ground gathering scraps and scratches as he did so. Finally he stopped as an oak tree got in his way. He heard a couple of his ribs crack from the impact but his adrenaline subdued the pain. He staggered to his feet and looked out in the direction where his bike had hit the beast. His motorcycle was scattered about the ground in tiny pieces.
Then he saw the cloven hoofed beast rising back to its feet “oh hell no!” he roared in fury summoning his spirit animal to imbue his hatchets with power.
Then he ran, summoning more energy to boost his natural abilities. Leaping into the air he threw one of the hatchets at the domed head. It connected and buried itself into the metal skull. Then he was on the beast himself swinging the other hatchet down over and over again hacking away at the dome. The beast swung its arms up and tried to grasp the little man but his fingers could not seem to catch him.
The beast roared “C…L….O…V....A…N!!!!” and then its whole body jerked as if in seizure.
The unexpected movement threw Coyote clear of the beast and into the dirt. Out of nowhere the beast brought forth a long metal fork. Energy began seeping out of its prongs. Coyote could barely move under the massive bruises that now covered his body. It looked like this would be the end of the Navajo warrior. In an instant his life would be extinguished.
“Stay away from my son” the spirit coyote growled as she jumped in between Billy and the beast.
She surrounded him in an energy barrier and strengthened it as much as she was able too. The energy hit it and she felt herself being drawn towards the forked weapon. Billy groaned in pain and then went silent slipping into a coma. The she coyote sighed in relief as she found his body now effectively closed off against the soul stealing energy.
The spirit’s own energy flared as she let herself be absorbed into the prongs and channeled into the beast’s body. As the cloven behemoth roared in satisfaction at gaining nourishment it quickly changed into a roar of shock as realization took hold. The spirit animal spread throughout the beast’s entire body shutting down its electrical system rendering it completely useless.
The beast stopped mid-movement as if it had been paralyzed and toppled over. The effort however used up all of the spirit coyote’s energy causing her spiritual body to disintegrate.
Boreas City town center…
Rook and Shamus take turns hacking away at the beast with their blades. Rook’s golden sword spreading it’s blinding light with each strike while Shamus’s cybernetic arm blade sends electrical pulses out in an effort to shut down the beast’s circuitry. War Angel on the other hand continued to heal the wounded as best he could.
But the cloven beast continued to roar in fury at being distracted from his main objective. His tuning fork weapon swung out in an arc and let loose its energy. This time Gabriel Jones, the War Angel, was in its path. He would not let anymore innocent lives be lost at the hands of these unholy machines of war. He prayed his angelic powers would be enough to stop the coming attack.
The energy struck him full in the chest and sent him spiraling backwards into a concrete wall. He felt his spine snap as his body crumpled to the ground. Gabriel’s healing ability kicked in instantly and within seconds he was back on his feet. This blast was an actual attack and not aimed at taking his soul.
Realizing the beast could switch up his attacks unnerved Gabriel a little bit. Up until this point he was acting on the assumption that they were mindless automations and not thinking creatures. This changed things considerably. He would have to be quicker than the beast if he had a chance.
“Rook, Shamus, keep him busy I have a plan!”
Shamus discharged his hellfire revolver once more and watched as the brimstone flashed harmlessly against the beast’s body. Rook managed to send forth a beam of light from the tip of his sword’s blade and into what he thought was the face of the creature. This momentarily stunned the cloven behemoth and caused him to pause in his assault.
This gave War Angel the opening he needed. Flying straight at the beast while his sword flared to life, Gabriel struck with all his strength. The holy fire of the blade sliced into pseudo flesh beneath the creature’s dome like a hot knife through butter. Halfway through where the neck should be the blade struck something harder that it couldn’t cut through. This sudden stop jarred Gabriel’s arms causing him to lose his grip on the sword.
By this time the beast regained its sight and had targeted War Angel. Weaponless Gabriel flapped his wings dodging blasts from the tuning fork. As he weaved his way in circles around the large behemoth he lost track of the energy blasts and was caught in the face by the next one. It wasn't an explosive blast this time it had changed back to that hazy energy that seemed to steal life from whatever it touched.
Gabriel felt the energy tug at the back of his consciousness and then he felt nothing. His body fell lifeless to the ground as his soul was stolen by the forked weapon. The soul was transferred into the beast’s body where it would be used to strengthen the creature. The cloven found a surprise in the angel’s soul much to its delight.
The beast found it could channel the healing ability into its own body to mend the wounds that these pests had dealt him! Working its way from the hooves upward, wounds began mending in mere seconds. As if in response however the angelic sword stuck in the beasts neck flared to life of its own accord and caused undue agony.
“Strike at the neck!” Seamus Flannigan shouted to Rook as he himself opened fire once more with his revolver.
The brimstone struck the weak spot causing the wound to grow larger. Rook was now climbing up the beast readying his own sword for a final strike to the beast’s neck. The beast shook trying to knock the armored knight free. Rook buried his sword into the beast’s body and gripped it tight to keep himself from falling.
Seamus summoned his magic wards and surrounded himself and his ally before using another smidgen to hurl himself up to the beast’s neck. Once there he plunged his electrified blade into the wound and discharged a massive pulse inside the beast. Rook was there now and he struck his own sword into the neck cleaving through the section that had stopped the fire sword from finishing the job.
Now gripping the hilts of both his and War Angel’s sword Rook turned them to an angle causing them to resemble large scissors and then closed the blades together cutting the last remaining metallic flesh that held the dome in place effectively decapitating the creature. As the behemoth toppled over both Seamus and Rook managed to fling themselves free.
The beast hit the ground with such force that it caused a small earthquake which caused Seamus and Rook to become buried underneath the rubble from a falling building.
The electricity Seamus had discharged into it before its beheading started a chain reaction in the body. As the creature’s own system rebelled against him it caused an explosion that sent parts of the beast flying in all directions. __________________
