BIG BLUE in ‘The Patient Man’ Chapter 2.
Character Created by Neo Gonzales Story by Wayne Clayton
Big Blue’s heart barely missed a beat as he tore up the desert earth back towards the General and the Doctor. The wind howled as his speed forced a pocket of air to bubble out before him. And suddenly it exploded into yet another sonic boom. But as the bubble burst a sudden silence erupted like an eye in a hurricane as the air was ripped open. It was then in that brief moment all Blue’s senses were crystal clear. It was the moment that sent shivers down his spine as he revelled in the perfect still, where he felt most alive.
It was in the perfect still that he saw the flash in the distance and heard the report of a gun. And suddenly the still was broken and his heart pounded once more as the wind pressed against him. He saw the white hot tracers flying towards him. Although never proved in battle Blue was very familiar with the sound and smell of live fire. From small arms to anti-aircraft machine guns he had stood his ground on the firing range, felt every shell slam into his body. But this was different he witnessed the projectiles split off from one another. These weren’t meant for him alone. The subtle time distortion resulting from his speed seemed to slow their approach as his own senses raced at five times greater then normal, but what to do?
Sam watched as Blue’s dust trail straightened out towards them. He couldn’t imaging what forces were been exerted on Blue’s body. But instead of slowing down to meet them he seemed to increase his speed, within a split second he felt the full force of a wall of air crash into him and lift him off his feet as Blue blasted between him and the General making no attempt to stop.
“Incoming!!” roared Blue
“What the…?!!?” gasped Sam as he landed flat on his back, mere seconds before he heard something fizz past his ear and explode into a ball of dirt.
Sam looked up to locate the General but found him lost behind the cloud of dust kicked up by Blue. But instantly he was distracted by a new sound echoing across the desert.
On the other side of that cloud the General too lay in the dirt. The wind knocked out of his body, not by the shockwave of Blues passing but by the force of something impacting against him, like a punch from a prize fighter with a horse shoe for a glove. Vinnie knew that feeling all too well.
As for Blue himself he knew little of what had happened to the other two. He had hoped that by blasting between them he had been able to save them from the speeding bullets but his attention had been firmly fixed on the final round. He could see it coming towards him in slow motion as he deliberately raced into its path. With his heightened senses he watched it corkscrew through a tunnel of air before it finally found him.
Viper released the trigger from under his finger. Watching the bullets race across the plain, the scope tracking each one as one by one they zeroed in on their marks. Covering the two miles distance in mere seconds from leaving the barrel of his gun. But their final moments were lost to him as the racing cloud of thick desert earth converged with them at their final destination. The point were they met between the two standing forms of the Doctor and the General exploded into yet another sonic boom followed by a brilliant ball of flaming green fire.
For the briefest of seconds Viper believed that that explosion of flame signalled the end of Big Blue but then the truth dawned on him that ball of fire was not stopping, it was heading straight for him. He leaped up only moments before the shallow pit in the earth which had been his home for the last few weeks was suddenly obliterated by a raging storm of fire and rock.
In that same moment he felt himself tossed through the air like a rag doll before slamming into the earth. Only the sound of cracking ribs filtered through his racing mind, but he cast it aside as his thoughts turned to escape. Instinctively he fired off a volley of covering rounds of high explosive grenades creating a wall of shrapnel between him and the comet of burning green bearing down on him.
Scrambling to his feet he ran as two more arching flames pulverized the ground where once he stood. He replied in kind as his thoughts unleashed two heat seeking missiles into the heart of the green fire storm that was Big Blue. He barely looked as the missiles found their target and were at once consumed by the fire that they had sort to destroy.
His heart pounding he made his way up a small rise to an outcrop of boulders on top. In the weeks before he had planned for every possibility, even failure. He has scouted the terrain for every gully and track for such an eventuality. For a lone man to escape across the barren open land was slim at best so ever the patient man he had secreted his own means of escape. But even now time was against him. Once more he let loose a blanket of covering fire as he sort to buy him self those few precious seconds. Diving behind the boulders he found what he had come for.
Back out across the desert Sam scrabbled across to find the General laying prone, his shoulder seeping thick blood. Still conscious the General grabbed hold of Sam shirt.
“Where is he? Where’s Big Blue?”
Sam looked over his shoulder to locate him. In the distance he saw the trail of destruction left in Blue’s wake as he tried to hunt down the gun man. Pulling himself up the General watched as yet another arch of green fire tore away the desert earth.
Suddenly they both saw what they took to be Blue leap up into the air. The General knew at once what Blue was planning and he had to act fast.
“Duck and Cover Soldier” he yelled into Sam ear.
“What??”
“Goddamn it not again…” muttered the General as he used the last of his strength to grapple the Doctor to the floor, pinning him underneath his body.
At the outcrop Viper peered out and saw his assailant rising up into the air, his arms raised above his head as if to strike. Once at the top of his apex he began to fall his whole body burning with the sickly green energy which had lay wasted to the desert behind him. His whole force bearing down on the outcrop Viper had made his last stand.
Time seemed to run slow as Blue fell back down to earth. His fists clenched as he drove them into the earth and suddenly the earth was no more.
Sam trapped beneath the General suddenly felt the ground heave and groan under him. Above the sky turned white and the clouds vanished as a deafening roar of wind tore over the desert, followed by fire and earth and then nothing but blackness, a deep dark blackness as he succumbed to its might.
