Shadow Hawk stares at the man in the leather jacket and wonders for an instant if the two of them have more in common than just masks. He shrugged the thought aside. Maybe he should have gotten Sebastian to get him a positive ID on this perp before he made his move. It was too late now. He could tell this guy was pissed.
He fired off another hawk star taking out the street lights plunging the alley into darkness. Mentally he noted the barely audible click indicating the magazine was empty. He’d have to reload his gauntlets at the first chance.
His night vision lenses flared to life hopefully giving him the advantage here in the dark. Shadow Hawk then extended his wrist blades and prepared himself. The other man was moving towards him without giving so much as a second thought to the darkness. Maybe he did miscalculate, could this punk have some type of night vision apparatus as well?
The other man charged swinging his night stick in his right hand. His left arm was bleeding heavily now, it was almost to the point of uselessness. But still the man moved fast. Shadow Hawk barely had time to duck before the stick would have connected with his head. As he stood back up he noted the other guy had a bird on his mask as well.
Interesting they did have more in common than he had first thought. He swung out with his right blade aiming for the other man’s face. The night stick was up in an instant batting his attack aside as if it was made by an amateur. Shadow Hawk moved again quicker this time.
Faking a left hook he instead came up with his right knee and connected to the other man’s stomach. The punk doubled over in pain. That’s when Shadow Hawk moved in for the kill. He retracted the blades this time and swung his armored fist slamming it into the other man’s already wounded left arm.
Raven hadn’t felt pain like this in a long time. He was too weak to continue this fight for much longer. The knee caught him by surprise. The blood loss must be affecting him more than he thought. His left arm was now completely useless. He hated to admit it but he was already beat.
He threw his night stick in the caped thug’s face. Then while Shadow Hawk was distracted he swept out with his leg connecting with the back of the other man’s legs knocking him off his feet. Then he leapt on top of him pounding away with his one good fist.
Shadow Hawk couldn’t believe the other man’s resourcefulness. How easily he was caught off guard with the thrown night stick. He thought it the last feeble attempt of a doomed man but realized too late it was a trick. Now he had to protect his face from the flurry of punches.
As Raven’s punches subsided Shadow Hawk took that moment to head-butt him in the face knocking him off. The leather clad punk lay unmoving on the pavement. Shadow Hawk quickly snapped a picture of him with his lens-cam. Then he fired off a grappler and was pulled up to the roof of a nearby building almost instantly.
At that moment Shadow Hawk radioed the Citadel “I need to be sure of the location Citadel.”
“Shadow bout time, we’ve had a development here” Sebastian blurted out.
“What happened? Is Talon okay?” it was the first thought that entered John’s mind.
“She’s fine, it’s Midnight. He seems to be suffering from power loss. I had to send Talon out in the jet to retrieve him.” *see Captain Midnight # 4*
“Not good Citadel. But I’m not sure what I can do from here. I have my hands full already” he replies looking over the edge of the roof toward the street below. But what he saw or didn’t see disturbed him. The other man was no longer where he left him. He was sure the man was unconscious when he left him but still he was now gone.
Shadow Hawk swore under his breath and then he continued speaking “have you confirmed the location of the CIA Containment Center?”
“Four blocks due south of your location.”
“Thanks Citadel, oh and I’m uploading a picture to the Sentinel Computer. I want a positive ID on this leather clad punk with the bird mask I just tangled with. He may become more of a nuisance than I first thought.”
Then Shadow Hawk started swinging from one building to the next as a thought struck him. He was actually here to break someone out of a government facility. But what he hadn’t thought of was how he was supposed to smuggle them both back across state lines to Saint Katherine’s Bay?
He had been hasty in his decision to come here. Without thinking he jumped on his sister’s motorcycle instead of taking the jet. Maybe subconsciously he knew his sister would need it to help the Captain? He wasn’t really sure what he was thinking but now he had to finish his mission.
Just how was he going to break into this facility? Should he have brought some kind of backup with him? These questions now troubled him as the building came into view. It was now only two buildings away. It looked like a normal office building from the outside. But he knew inside the place had more security than Fort Knox. Shadow Hawk hoped he could bypass most of them with the various gadgets housed in the pouches of his utility belt.
“I don’t want to chance them discovering my identity. I’ll have to upgrade my mask before going in. My nose and mouth are still too exposed. With the right face recognition software they might actually identify me” John whispered out loud to the night air as he contemplated his next move. __________________
