Captain Midnight couldn’t believe that it actually worked! The bracers were now fully operational again. Though the energy did fill a bit different than the original he wasn’t sure what that meant and he had no time right now to contemplate it. The Kronoan had to be stopped before he could do any serious damage.
Superion charged on ahead into the wilderness following the trail that Grog had left in his wake. Toppled trees and dead animals littered the ground in a zigzag pattern. Captain Midnight took to the sky performing recon of the surrounding area.
“What do ya see up there?” Superion yelled.
“Nothing the area is clear. His path of destruction simply ends.”
“Ah to hell with this than” Superion replies leaping into the air as well “this lizard isn’t smart enough to try and hide he’s runnin scared.”
“Agreed” came the reply, as Captain Midnight spotted something in the distance and pointed “there he goes now!”
The duo raced towards the horizon chasing the lizard as he made his way north. Grog found himself landing on a floating chunk of ice in the arctic. The cold had no effect on his coldblooded physiology though and so he didn’t even notice the drastic drop in temperature. He leapt again this time landing on the mainland.
To Captain Midnight and Superion however the cold penetrated their clothes causing chills to shiver up their spines. The two heroes instinctively knew this fight was almost over. But Midnight wasn’t sure if that meant they would be the victors or if the cold would get them first. He already felt the frostbite setting in.
“Too long up here and we’ll get pneumonia” he told Superion.
“If you’re afraid of a little cold weather, then head on home. I can handle it from here.”
“No way I let you take all the credit pretty boy. If you stay I stay” Midnight replied.
Large white bears were fishing on the coastline and were startled by his approach. Grog roared at them menacingly then he heard his stomach growl. That’s when he realized he hadn’t eaten anything in over sixty years. He spit out a glob of acid in the direction of the polar bears hoping to wound one enough that it wouldn’t put up a fight. Then he leapt on top of it, ripping at its white fur, digging his claws into the flesh beneath with a ravenous hunger that had taken control of his entire being.
As the creature was thus occupied Superion and Captain Midnight arrived. Midnight hurled a high powered energy blast at the creature’s backside. Grog was knocked off of his prey and momentarily stunned. Superion was upon him in a moment using this to his advantage and pounding away at the creature.
Grog retaliated with a well placed kick to Superion’s midsection and then turned his attention on his other pursuer. Midnight however would not let the creature close in. He hit him with another energy blast causing the Kronoan to drop to one knee.
Superion reentered the fray this time punching and kicking with such rapid fury that all Grog had time to do was cover his head with his arms and curl up in a ball. Grog finally lay unmoving battered and bruised. He appeared dead to the world. Superion kept wailing on him unrelenting in his fury. He wanted to make sure the creature really was dead this time.
“Something’s not right here” Captain Midnight exclaimed “this was too easy.”
“Everything is always this easy for me” Superion replied “as long as you’re in my company you better get used to it.”
Grog roared again throwing the loud mouth off of him. Then he rose to his feet and Midnight hit him with the energy blast again. But this time he braced himself for it and shrugged it off. Swinging his tail he connected with Captain Midnight sending him flying backwards into large snowdrift. Superion was back up at this point and he flew straight at the lizard and hit the alien with all his might.
Grog flew backwards and crashed into the icy waters. His heavily scaled body drags him down into its darkened depths. He struggled to swim back up but the hit he had taken from Superion seems to have shattered his spine. He was paralyzed! What the hell!
The creature roared again and again. But beneath the murky water the sound stayed stagnant. As the Kronoan warrior tried to struggle for a few minutes more he felt the water start to freeze around him securing him in a block of ice. Then the ice itself came to rest on the ocean floor.
“Do we go in after him?” Captain Midnight asks knocking the snow from his uniform.
“What and mess up my hair?” Superion says with all seriousness “nah he’s as good as dead. I got him pretty good with that last punch.”
“You know Superion you’re pretty good in a fight and I could use you on the team I’m building.”
Just then the Shadow Jet flew into view followed by a V-22 Osprey. The Shadow Jet hovered where it was and the Osprey’s engines went vertical and the plane sat down as easily as a helicopter. The cargo bay on the VTOL aircraft opened up to reveal several costumed figures.
“No thanks Midnight I have my own team” Superion answers nodding at his teammates “meet the Squad.”
“This is Deathchild, Neutron, the Knight, Falcon, and the Hunter” Superion made the introductions as he flexed his muscles as if to say, ‘even among these titans I am the strongest’.
After the introductions Superion turns back to Captain Midnight “you ready to for a rematch? It’s time for your second pounding!”
“No time hot shot” Falcon said “we’re needed elsewhere. Hey why don’t you join us Midnight? We always have room for someone else who can put up with Superion’s mouth.”
“Some other time maybe” Captain Midnight answers “if you ever decided to loose the pretty boy then we’ll talk. Just do me a favor will ya. If anything world ending should cross your path call me immediately.”
“Will do” Falcon replied extending his hand and the two men shook. __________________
