“Shadow this is Midnight do you copy?”
“Midnight this is Citadel, Shadow has gone silent did you place the tracer?”
“Affirmative Citadel, how soon before you get a lock on the target?”
“Ten minutes tops” Sebastian King answers from the Citadel then he brings up another screen showing a map of North America “the blip is showing up over Toronto are you in pursuit?”
“Negative Citadel is there any chance of getting a ride?” Captain Midnight asks reluctantly as he tries once more to activate his bracers to no avail.
A puzzled look crosses Sebastian’s face as he turns around in his chair to face Jessica “has John taught you how to fly the jet yet?”
Jessica Dark brightened up a bit and replied happily “I’ve ran the simulation several times only crashing twice.”
“It’ll have to do” Sebastian said turning back to the Sentinel Supercomputer “okay Midnight, Talon is en-route to your location.”
Jessica donned her brown and gold costume and took the elevator down to the secret underground hanger. There she stood for a moment admiring the two seated stealth plane which she had nicknamed the “Shadow Jet”. She wondered if she should have told Sebastian the truth about the simulator. How she hadn’t successfully landed the plane even once but then thought better of it. This was her chance to prove she could be more than just her brother’s sidekick.
She had the plane in the air after several minutes of fiddling with the controls and set the coordinates for Groom Lake. A few minutes later she hit turbulence and almost lost control. Then she noticed the autopilot, why hadn’t she thought of that first? Without a second thought she activated the autopilot and sat back in the pilot’s seat with an obvious sigh of relief.
As Groom Lake grew closer Jessica activated the cloaking device rendering the jet virtually invisible and then began her descent. Not twenty feet from the ground the plane went into hover-mode. Jessica wiped the sweat from her brow glad that she didn’t have to actually try landing. Then she opened the hatch.
Captain Midnight climbed aboard the plane and without asking took over the controls “is this thing fast?”
“Fast enough.”
With a nod Cole Turner looked over the control panel. This fancy jet was a lot more complex than the airplanes he was used too. But they basically all operated the same. His pilot training came back to him in the blink of an eye and he eased the throttle out and pulled back on the control stick.
“Midnight to Citadel I need you to find out what’s so important at Groom Lake. I need to know what this Superion character was after and if he got his hands on it.”
Meanwhile in the skies over Canada two large figures were trading blows. Grog was excited to learn that the difference in gravity allowed him to stay in the air a lot longer than he could’ve back on Kronos. Whipping his tail at Superion he laughed as it connected with the man’s face.
The red, white, and blue hero did not like the way this was going. Normally he would’ve had the enemy beaten by now but this lizard didn’t even look like he was getting tired. Superion delivered a haymaker that he was sure would finally put Grog down. But the lizard barely even staggered backwards.
“You might as well give up Godzilla there is only one way this can end” Superion tried using persuasion “I’ve never lost a fight!”
Grog roared at the hero still not understanding this Earthling language. If only he had been able to get to his ship before this @$$#%! attacked him. Then he would have been able to get his language converter and his weapon. His power-knuckles would have already ensured his victory against this foe.
Superion took this momentary breather to activate his communicator sending out a call to the rest of his team. The Squad, once assembled, would be able to take down this creature easily he was sure of it. Though he didn’t really think he needed them. He would however enjoy gloating once they arrived and saw him standing over the alien’s dead body.
The Shadow Jet de-cloaked roughly a hundred yards from the raging battle. This wasn’t the first time he had laid his eyes on a Kronoan before. Myd Nie Tur’s words came back to him of how capturing Grog delayed the Kronoan invasion. He wondered briefly if this was the threat he had been sent back to stop? But it just didn’t make any sense.
“Talon does this thing have weapons?”
“Cannons and rockets” Jessica replied “you switch them on by pressing the buttons over there” she said pointing to his left.
He found the buttons and brought up the weapon system. The computer achieved a target lock on the Kronoan within a matter of seconds and Captain Midnight launched the rockets. He didn’t really care that Superion was still too close to the creature. Even if red, white, and blue were one of the good guys there was still the matter of payback to consider. Besides Midnight figured this guy wouldn’t be hurt none too bad by some little old rockets.
Two rockets blazed a trail across the sky heading straight for their target. As the first one hit Grog in the back it exploded sending shrapnel outward in all directions. Grog himself was forced through the air out of control slamming right into Superion. Then the other rocket hit them. The force from this one pushed them both in a downwards spiral.
The two behemoths slammed into the ground with such force that cracks in the earth spread out toppling nearby buildings. Captain Midnight landed the Shadow Jet nearby and ordered Talon to remain onboard. Then he opened the hatch and jumped down to the ground. He wasn’t sure what he could do if the monster got up but he had to do something.
“That the best you got” came the familiar egotistical voice as Superion rose to his feet dusting himself off.
“You’d think getting hit by a rocket would at least shut that yap of yours” Captain Midnight replied.
As the two men stared at each other contemplating whether or not to continue where they left off the creature stirred. Grog leapt out of the crater hurling a chunk of the ground towards Superion as he did so. With a punch Superion shattered the earth into tiny pieces showering himself and Midnight with dirt. The lizard took this momentary distraction to run off into the nearby wilderness.
Captain Midnight’s communicator chirped at that moment “I’ve been monitoring everything and I think I have a solution to your power problems.”
“Spit it out Citadel, I don’t have time to guess.”
“Whatever energy your bracers use is very close to that of solar energy. If you could somehow get them close to the Sun it’s possible that they would recharge themselves.”
Overhearing the conversation Superion lets out a laugh “is that it? No wonder I beat you, your power isn’t really yours. You can’t rely on technological power. Hand ‘em over.”
“I’m not just giving you my bracers.”
“Relax I’m not going to steal them. I can fly them up to the Sun for you.”
"What's the catch?"
"When this is done I get to pound you again" Superion said in reply taking the armbands. __________________
