[I’ve spent the last two weeks just trying to settle into this new world. 2009 sure is a lot different than 1936. At least I’ve managed to get a hold of some “in-style” clothing and rent what they call an apartment. Back in my time I could buy a house for what my lease says I’ll be shelling out over the next twelve months on this place. But at least it isn’t rat or roach infested. Lucky for me my bank account sat untouched over the past 73 years collecting interest. I still wonder why the bank didn’t close my account knowing that I had no family that was going to come and collect it and seeing as how the government had me declared dead after a fatal crash involving an experimental aircraft. Of course I also wonder if I could somehow claim my life insurance policy by posing as a long lost relative, now that would definitely boost my income up a notch.]

As Cole Turner, masquerading as the superhero Captain Midnight, flew over Saint Katherine’s Bay he pondered these questions and more as he searched out his prey. He had yet to see any signs of this “catastrophic event” that the alien Myd Nie Tur had warned him about. But he did spot the person he was looking for.

He quietly landed on a nearby roof to survey the situation that lay out before him. The great John Dark still fighting crime as the vigilante Shadow Hawk was in the ally below yelling at a common street thug.

“You better tell me where I can find Big Frankie, scumbag or I’m going to make you bleed” Shadow Hawk snarled as he wrapped one armored hand around the punk’s throat and slammed him up against the brick wall of the building Captain Midnight was currently occupying.

“I...I…don’t know who that is…honest.”

“You wouldn’t know honest if it snuck up and bit you on the @$$” Shadow Hawk said slamming him once more against the wall and this time extending the wrist blade on his right gauntlet pointing it a mere inch from the thug’s left eye “you better stop lying to me before you have to either wear a patch or get yourself a glass eye.”

The thug’s face was covered with fear and he began sweating profusely. It was apparent he really didn’t have the information Shadow Hawk wanted and knew he was about to pay for this lack of knowledge. Captain Midnight decided this was enough and dropped off the roof landing four feet away from the other two.

“That’s enough Shadow Hawk” Cole commanded careful not to let John’s real name slip.

Shadow Hawk turned his head to look this new intruder in the face but his grip remained tight around the thug’s neck “do I know you?”

“No, but this action is beneath you. If you let your rage takeover there isn’t any way you will reach your full potential.”

“What does a pajama wearing goody two-shoes know about my potential? You think just because you have superpowers that you are able to tell the rest of us capes what to do? I am getting so sick of you hypocrites.”

“Let him go or I will be forced to make you” Cole replied calmly and with meaning.

“Fine” Shadow Hawk said as he released his grip on the thug.

As the thug took his chance to escape John Dark extended the other wrist blade and dove at Cole with a look of fury on his face. However before he could make contact Captain Midnight hit him square in the chest with a low level energy blast sending him sprawling backwards into the side of a dumpster.
“Calm down John or I will be forced to hurt you.”

“How do you know my…never mind you might have caught me by surprise with that first blast but you’ll not get another chance to try that.”

Shadow Hawk fired his grappler from his gauntlet and quickly scrambled up to the top of the roof. Captain Midnight just shook his head and flew after him. But when Cole landed topside Shadow Hawk was nowhere to be seen.

There were shadows everywhere [he could be hiding in any one of them] Cole grumbled to himself as he squinted hard trying to see past the darkness.

Shadow Hawk however did not have the same affliction for he activated his night-vision lenses and made his way through the shadows until he had the perfect vantage point. Then he fired off three hawk-stars from his gauntlet. The bird shaped blades zinged through the air winging their way towards the target.

One struck each of Midnight’s armbands while the third hit him in the chest. The armbands deflected theirs but the third managed to draw blood as it found its mark. John was certain that the hawk-stars would destroy the armbands disarming his opponent but he’d been wrong. And the third only caused a little scratch at most, not enough to slow the other down.

“Is that all you got Johnny boy? If you would come on out and play nice we could talk this out. I didn’t come here for a fight. I have a proposition for you.”

Unsure of this newcomer’s intention Shadow Hawk activates his earpiece communicator and contacts his friend Sebastian King via the Sentinel Supercomputer operating in the clock tower that serves as his H.Q.

“Sebastian I need you to search the data base and find out everything you can about a new superhero. I’ve just taken his picture with the camera built into my mask lens and am uploading it to you now.”

“I’ve got it. Whoa I haven’t seen this guy before. Hang on...” Sebastian types away at the keyboard and runs a comparison between the photograph and other recent superhero sightings nation wide “it says here he calls himself Captain Midnight. So far I can only find records covering the last week and a half. However over that time he’s saved a bus load of children from going off a cliff, rescued 15 hostages from a bank robbery, and even saved the crew of an oil tanker that was sinking off the west coast.”

“Okay, okay so he’s a freaking boy scout. But who is he really?”

“I’ll need more time to figure that out John.”

“No time” Shadow Hawk says switching off his communicator.

At that moment a mid level energy blast struck at Shadow Hawk’s feet sending him flying into the air. As he landed Captain Midnight was upon him punching with all his might. The first punch connected with Shadow Hawk’s jaw but then he rolled away before the second blow came.

Shadow Hawk retaliated with a well placed kick to the stomach causing Midnight to double over in pain.

[I can’t compete with this guy. For now he has the upper hand. I need more information so that I can formulate a plan] John thought to himself taking Captain Midnight’s momentary pain as his chance to escape, he leapt over the edge of the roof firing off his grappler and swinging out into the darkness.

I'd like that. Too bad I don't have a time machine.

yeah that'd be cool

I had to figure out a way for him to survive and didn't want him having to steal food or money just to keep from starving to death.

I know realistically his account wouldn't have just sat there for that long after he had been declared dead.

Gotta wonder though how it would look him showing up at the bank with his drivers liscense showing him to be in his 80s or early 90s and him looking like he's in his mid 20s. I wouldn't think they'd believe him to be the same person.

Maybe he should have had some stocks or bonds stashed away somewhere. He would be able to cash those I believe. I think.

that's an idea too, no big deal I mean if comics were 100% realistic they probably wouldn't be any fun anyways.

I'm about halfway through with Captain Midnight #2. Probably by the end of the weekend it'll be posted

Well if there is ever a movie you could change it to stocks or bonds.

Never hurts to be prepared.

Great idea Tim, if a movie ever gets made I'll make sure your cut of the profits when I use your idea!
