Since I didn't hear back from everyone and wanted to post the story I wrote a couple of my own characters in place the ones I didn't get the okay for. In this issue they will only be briefly mentioned but be prepared for the next one when they will get a little more face time.
Now for part 2
“My apologies human, in former Earthling years, it would have been 3155 A.D.”
“What do you mean would have been?” Cole asks very concerned.
“The human race has died out, all except one and he is no longer actually human” one of the other Midnighters, a woman, answered.
“Let us get him back to H.Q.” Midnight Berserker growled as he looked straight up into the sky.
The other Midnighters did the same and Cole could not help but follow their gaze. A strange beam of light hit them full own and their bodies dematerialized. He attempted to scream as he saw his hands fade away before his eyes but he could not.
The team rematerialized aboard a strange spacecraft to be met by another alien entity wearing the same uniform.
“Welcome to the mother-ship” this very small glowing alien greeted him “I am Midnite Lite, chief engineer.”
“Midnite Lite?” Cole questioned.
“He glows in the dark” the same woman who had told him the fate of his people, and who he would find out is called Midnight Maiden, answered him again.
“Which is why he is confined to the ship” Midnight Berserker put in.
“Well the boss is waiting on the bridge” Midnite Lite said anxious to take their focus off of him.
The team marched toward a lift and proceeded to the ship’s bridge where their leader was waiting for them. Cole gasped in surprise upon seeing this new entity. He was not prepared for what awaited him. The alien entity was nothing more than a floating head surrounded by mysterious crimson energy.
“I am Myd Nie Tur, welcome aboard our ship Cole Turner.”
“How do you know my name?”
“I know a great many things. Like I know that you are the only hope of restoring the human race.”
“Uhh, how exactly do you mean that? Because umm, I’m not exactly into alien women.”
“Do not worry; we did not bring you here to breed with our females” Myd Nie Tur answered.
“Though I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility,” the Midnight Maiden interrupted with playful mischief in her voice “he is a mighty fine specimen after all.”
“Stand down Maiden” the Berserker commanded.
“I was just saying” she answered sheepishly staring at the floor.
Myd Nie Tur gives each of them a stare regaining their full attentions “if I may continue? Human I want to send you back in time but not to 1936. A great catastrophe takes place late in the year 2009. This event will effectively wipe out your species.”
“What happens?”
“That we do not know exactly. All human records were destroyed. All we know is what has been passed down from Myd Nie Tur to Myd Nie Tur over the last eleven hundred years give or take twenty.”
The being known as Myd Nie Tur relates how his real name was once Remus Vel’Kar a new initiate in the Midnight Avenger Corps. He went on to tell of how each chosen leader gives up their bodies in an effort to become one with the Crimson Energy that now surrounds his head.
“The energy fuels the bracers which all Midnighters are issued. Without it we are powerless. Though it was not always so. The original Midnight Avenger Corps did not have this energy. It was not discovered until decades later.”
Captain Cole Turner found himself enthralled by Vel’Kar’s tale and so he listened intently without interrupting though his mind was filled with many questions. The others had each taken up positions standing in a circle around their leader, each one listening as well though they all knew the story inside and out for they had to memorize it upon initiation into the Corps.
“The original team consisted of humans. These men and women became freedom fighters only striking out against their oppressors during the night when it was safer for them to do so” here he paused in his tale in order to catch his breath before continuing on “the human John Dark led these fighters for he had more experience fighting evil at night, within the pitch blackness he was more at home than any of the others, except maybe Jack Turner the Vampire Hunter.”
Here the other Midnighters all saluted their founder’s memory and chanted in unison “in the darkness we find our refuge and our greatest strength” here Myd Nie Tur smiled as he too recited the chant which had become the team’s creed.
Now he returned to his tale “some of these fighters still held onto costumed identities they had maintained before the catastrophe but some gave up those identities completely. John Dark for instance was formerly known as Shadow Hawk, defender of a city called Saint Katherine’s Bay. He lost his girlfriend and his sister during the conflict, both of which wore costumes as well.”
Here he paused again, this time the team bowed their heads in silence. Cole was beginning to get the feeling he was amidst a room full of nut job cultists. He hoped not for they were his only chance to get home.
“In the year 2041 John assembled the remaining humans in an underground bunker that had survived beneath what was formerly known as the Washington Monument. This team of humans included three with ghost like abilities, mercenary Corey Wraithe, former peace officer Matthew Corrie, and the Sugar Skull, Max. The team also consisted of the bionically enhanced Cyber Jack, the former villain turned heroine Bombshell, and the electrokinetic Voltage.”
“How do you know about all of these strange people?”
“Because one team member is still alive” Myd Nie Tur announced proudly.
“Alive? But that was over a thousand years ago” Cole protested as his mind screamed inside his skull of how impossible this all seemed!
“He has become immortal” Midnight Berserker explained as the last survivor exited the lift, bringing him onto the bridge.
He was roughly the same size as a normal human with larger muscles, green skin, and a ferocious face. The human, if he could still be called that, did not bother to speak. The others parted, giving him space in their circle.
“This is Hyde” Myd Nie Tur said at last “trust me he was human once. He was a scientist by the name of Henry Jekyll. After creating the formula that transformed him into what you see before you he lost control, ravaging the countryside for years. Eventually he learned to control his darker side and even fought alongside other heroes before the catastrophe happened. Now he can no longer change back into his human form, for if he does there is a chance he would become nothing more than dust, thus ending his life completely. In this form however he does not age, he simply exists.”
“Mr. erm Hyde is it?” Cole asked “what exactly is this catastrophe and how can it be stopped?”
“He cannot answer you” Midnight Maiden responded “for he no longer possesses the ability of speech. His tongue was cutout during a border skirmish with the Kronoans.”
“Kronoans?”
“My race” Midnight Berserker said somewhat solemly “or rather my former race for I have been exiled for high treason.”
“The Kronoans inhabit the Atlas Galaxy and live on the planet Kronos. They are a barbaric race of lizard folk who would rather bash your head in than talk to you” Midnite Lite recited happily as if reading it from a textbook, before being silenced by a harsh look from the Berserker.
“Don’t mind Crug here” Midnight Maiden said pointing at the Berserker “he’s a big softie; he got himself exiled for helping me escape from one of their prison ships. Now he’s on our side.”
“A Kronoan scout by the name of Grog arrived on Earth back on July 7, 1947 in what was called Roswell, New Mexico. He was captured by government forces however preventing the Kronoans from launching their initial invasion. Now with the humans out of the way they have managed to secure the lower hemisphere for their own. We are all that stand in their way of total conquest” Myd Nie Tur explained. __________________
