Within minutes of General Vanguard’s call we were onboard a chopper headed for Washington. The ESTP device was working perfectly narrowing the location down even further the closer we got to the city.
“He’s near the White House” I exclaimed with alarm.
“Do you think he’s going after the President?” the General asked “because if so I need to alert the Secret Service.”
“He may be mentally unstable but he’s not stupid General” Dr. Fuerst broke in “I don’t know what his target could be…wait a minute the Washington Monument. That’s where he’s headed!”
She said this with such conviction that neither I nor the General questioned her. Luther Vanguard ordered the helicopter pilot to set us down just outside the obelisk. Before the chopper completely touched down I was already phasing through the floor and racing toward the entry way. I activated my radar sense and phased my way through the door at the monoliths base.
“Wait sergeant” Luther shouted at my back.
I phased my head back through appearing as an apparition to hear what he had to say “you don’t know where he’s going.”
“There’s only one way he can go, up” I said pointing towards the monuments top.
“No there’s not” Angela Fuerst replied “there’s a secret underground facility that is only accessible to those who have the proper key.”
“Okay so down not up” I said “what is up with all these secret underground facilities?” I asked not expecting an answer.
With that I was back inside the monument with a new direction and more questions. What was this facility used for? And how did Blake already know about it? I phased through the elevator doors and then through the floor falling down the shaft. It went on for so long I thought I’d wind up in China.
But then I reached the ground and solidified myself to stop my descent. This facility was almost identical to the lab we were created in. But I detected no hostiles, no even Blake. I pulled my energy rifle from around my shoulder and switched off the safety. I wasn’t taking any chances of getting caught with my pants down.
Just in time too, something hairy slammed into me from my right. If my rifle sling hadn’t been around my shoulder I would have lost my weapon. Then a strong hand was trying to gouge out my eyes. I managed to get the nozzle of the rifle pointed in my attackers general direction and squeezed the trigger.
It was the chimpanzee Lucy, she had gone feral. Right now her body was limp but I didn’t want to take any chances. Pulling out a Containment Energy Net from my rucksack I dropped it on her and pushed the button of the control switch causing it to hum to life.
“That ought to hold you until Dr. Fuerst can retrieve you.”
I was beginning to think Lucy was the one that killed the lab techs at the other facility. But then where had Blake Hawthorn gotten to? I had to keep looking for him. I was starting to get the feeling that I would go over the edge myself soon if I didn’t slow down and think things through.
I rounded the corner at the end of the hall and found overhead piping leaking hazardous waste all over the floor. It looked as if the pipe had sustained gunfire. As I made his way further down I came to a T junction. Then I looked both right and left trying to determine my next course.
To the right lay half a dozen bodies covered in pools of blood. Phasing so as not to get the blood all over myself I turned right. At the end of this corridor I came to locked steel door and walked right through it. There I found Blake Hawthorn chewing on the leg of a man in a lab coat.
“Let go of the man’s leg Blake! Dr. Fuerst says she can cure you, make you normal again. So what do you say we head back topside?”
“Wraitheee” he hissed at me with disgust “join me and we can exact our revenge.”
“No can do” I said squeezing the trigger on my energy rifle.
Blake was ready for me though. He didn’t try and phase like I thought he would, instead he leapt to the side completely avoiding the blast. Then he drew his own gun. A P229 DAK that he must’ve taken off one of the dead guards in the hallway. He knew it wouldn’t hurt me so why try it?
Then I noticed it was just a distraction. The bullet struck a circuit box on the wall behind me causing electrical currents to seep out into the room effectively shutting down my radar senses. He then ran off into the shadows. I couldn’t pick him out of the pitch blackness.
“Where are you Blake?” I demanded “we don’t have to do this. Let me help you out. I am still your friend Blake, no matter what has happened.”
“Noooo, you’re not. You have betrayed me by joining them” his voice came from further near the back wall of the darkened room.
Then I saw a shadow move toward the left trying to flank me. I pulled out another CE Net from my sack and steadied myself for the attack that was sure to come. He launched himself at me howling in fury and clawing at my flesh. I almost lost the net but I held on to it as I rolled with him using his own momentum to throw him over me and into the wall. Then I tossed the net but before I could activate the containment energy he ripped clean through it.
I was starting to think there was no way I could end this without really hurting him. He launched another attack at me, this time his fists were swinging. I had to cover my head with my arms to protect myself. Then I remembered I could phase. His fist went through me and he stumbled forward. I solidified just as he passed through me and kicked him hard in the back.
He must have remembered his ability at about the same time that he recovered for then he phased to protect himself from my next attack. How was I supposed to beat someone who like me can let every attack pass harmlessly through him?
Then I remembered the canister grenades on my belt. Some of them were filled with the containment energy as well. All I had to do was pull the pin and wait for it to detonate. It would take us both out but it was the only option I had left.
I found the pin and pulled then I kept attacking and phasing to keep him occupied. The canister exploded, containment energy erupting like a volcano.
Moments later I heard voices and found that I had been constrained with an energy net, as had Blake. We were both on the surface now. My eyes finally focused and I saw Director Robbie Westlake standing over me.
“Looks like you did retrieve him for us. However you didn’t follow orders so now your both getting decommissioned.”
“Let me go you b@$+erd” I shouted at the top of my lungs!
Then I looked around and saw Dr. Angela Fuerst in handcuffs, but the General was mysteriously missing. Had he slipped away when the CIA arrived on the scene? I had no idea but I hoped that meant he was working on a plan to break me out.
Then I caught myself thinking ‘why on Earth did I let myself be chosen for this?’ __________________
