It took me a minute to figure out what needed to be done. As soon as the first agent rounded the corner he opened fire. I immediately phased and the bullets flew harmlessly through me. Then I dove through the rear wall. I had no idea what was on the other side but it had to be better than getting shot at.
The stench hit my nostrils and nearly knocked me off my feet. There was sewage everywhere. Just my luck, is that a piece of crap touching my boot? I kicked it away and looked around. The sewer pipe was enormous. It seemed as if a lot of the chemical waste from the lab was dumped in here as well. I wonder if the city knew about this.
Nothing for it right now, it wouldn’t take long for them to figure out where I went. I looked both right and left down the length of the pipe trying to determine which way to go. To the right the tunnel bent back towards the lab and to the left it bent away from it. I chose left. Trudging along the sewer I kept my radar sense active. I wouldn’t feel safe until I put as much distance between myself and the facility as possible.
All too soon I heard shouts from the tunnel behind me. The containment team must have found an access point to the sewer. Finally a ladder up ahead and sunlight filtering in! I climb the ladder and phase through the hatch leaving it locked in place to at the very least slow down my pursuers.
I found myself in the middle of Main Street. The noise was almost unbearable. A taxi came screeching to a halt within inches of me. It was strange to see so many people glowing red in the city. Then I remembered I hadn’t deactivated my radar sense. How is it that there are dozens of potential threats in a one block radius?
Where do I go from here? I need to get off the street before I’m spotted. I turn down a dark alley and follow it along to a small side street. Then I heard the net drop. Instinctively I phase to allow the net to pass through me. It doesn’t.
“What the…?”
“Gotcha” an agent said holding a small remote in his hand.
The net was giving off some sort of energy which messed with my intangibility. Every second I thought I could slip through I became solid again almost instantly. Then the net constricted forcing me to curl up in a ball. I felt foolish. Why had I wasted so much time here? I could’ve moved inside a building out of sight or into a passing car.
Soon after the lights went out, I woke up back in the laboratory strapped to a table. I tried to phase but the table sent out the same energy as the net had. Director Westlake was standing over me with a grim smile on his face.
“I guess we owe you an apology sergeant” he said gruffly “Dr. Fuerst finally came too and told us it was Agent Hawthorn not you who killed my men.”
“Then let me go” I snarled as menacingly as I could.
“Not unless you agree to retrieve him for us.”
“That’s were I was headed when your goons captured me” I tried to shout but my parched throat caused it to come out barely above a whisper.
“Yes well you did escape and you are our property now. So we can’t have you running loose without authorization.”
“I’ll get him but after that I want out. I want to be retired with a full pension” I didn’t think they’d actually go for it but it was worth a shot.
“No chance in hell” Director Westlake replied “we put too much money and effort into this process to just let you go on your way.”
“Then no deal” I spat.
“Okay have it your way” Robbie Westlake nodded toward a lab tech and 10,000 volts of electricity shot through my system.
“AAAAHHHHH! You SOB! Let me go!”
“Shut it down” Westlake told the tech and the electricity stopped “now sergeant Wraithe do you have a change of heart?”
Instead of answering him I focused with all my strength trying to get my phasing ability to work despite the energy constraints. I brought my radar sense to bear as well and saw that only Director Westlake glowed red, the tech was no threat. Maybe I could use that information. Then the electricity hit me again causing me to loose focus.
“There is no escaping your constraints” the director said “or have you not figured that out by now.”
“Blake managed it” I pointed out “why can’t I?”
“Because your mind is still rational sergeant” came the reply.
