In an effort to end the war on terror once and for all the U.S. government decided to experiment with biologically enhanced soldiers. At the time they didn’t realize how serious the side effects could potentially be. This project was classified as Top Secret, need to know, and only the highest ranking officials even heard whispers of its existence. CIA Director Robbie Westlake was chosen to head up the operation.  He was tasked with finding not only the perfect test subject but also the doctor to conduct the experiments.

Dr. Angela Fuerst was chosen for her extensive knowledge in the field of biological engineering and human evolution. For months she designed the procedure going so far as testing out various chemicals on chimpanzees. Out of ninety-eight test subjects only two survived. Chimp # 35 designation Edgar and Chimp #87 designation Lucy. On these two primates rested hope of a successful outcome.

Three weeks after exposure to the chemical cocktail jokingly referred to as “performance enhancers”, Edgar suffered a mental breakdown. His mind seemingly snapped and he attacked Dr. Fuerst and the lab techs. When one of the technicians tried to subdue him, the chimp simply became intangible, phasing through his grasp. He remained that way for a few moments before returning to normal. Dr. Fuerst was then able to inject a tranquilizer in his neck, causing him to go to sleep. Chimp # 35 never woke up from that slumber.

On the other hand Lucy seemed to have adapted perfectly well to the treatment. She was able to phase her body in and out of solidity at will. After running several tests it was discovered that she could also “sense” danger approaching from a distance of 10 meters. After several more weeks of constant monitoring Dr. Fuerst determined there were no ill effects of the treatment.

Going over the data with Director Westlake led to the approval of human testing. Even though the test had only about 1% chance of success it was enough for the government. Then the candidate selection process began.

Director Robbie Westlake gathered together twenty-five outstanding performers in various branches of service to include FBI, CIA, NSA, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Homeland Security.  The twenty-five swiftly dwindled down to two candidates. The government decided to use both Agent Blake Hawthorn and Sergeant Corey Wraithe for the experiment.

If I had known then what I know now I probably wouldn’t have been nearly as excited that I had been chosen.  I mean why would I voluntarily undergo and experiment that killed ninety-six primates and caused one to go insane? Yes they paraded Lucy around in front of us showing off her abilities but they failed to mention Edgar or the others.

Of course I didn’t find any of this out until later, and only by snooping around in a triple locked filing cabinet hidden in a room that wasn’t supposed to exist. A room whose door read A-51, Authorized Personnel Only!

to be continued...
