I had to exert myself in order to keep up with my spirit guide. By the time I reached her I was covered in my own sweat. I'm glad I thought to grab a bottle of water from the saddle bag because now I gulped it down greedily.

We were standing in the middle of a field of stones. I looked at the coyote quizzically. Then her voice broke into my head again.

"This is the Navajo training grounds. Here you will learn through meditation and physcal exercises. Many brave warriors before you have stood on this very spot. You will learn to read the land in order to track your prey. You will also learn to fight with the hatchet, spear, and bow."

"But how do I learn these things" I caught myself thinking and before I could stop I was answered.

"I will teach you. And I will aid you in the battles that lie ahead. When you need me I can protect you with my spirit, I will help you seek out that which is invisible to the naked eye, and I will imbue your weapons allowing them to break through magical defenses.

"How is this possible?"

"You are Navajo, anything is possible, all you have to do is believe. We will seek out the truth together."

"What truth" I asked "the whereabouts of my father?"

Clearly irritated at my one track mind the spirit dispersed, no longer in the form of a coyote the energy surrounded me and in an instant I was looking down on the freeway at mile marker 23. It was as if I was floating up above it in midair like a ghost.

A tractor trailer was barrelling down the street, my father behind the wheel. An explosion of energy engulfed it, not unlike my spirit guide's energy, and in that instant it was gone.

"What happened?"

"I cannot explain it anymore than you can" the coyote said standing beside me once more "I can only show you what happened, I do not know what caused it."

"But I must do something. I have to find out what did this."

"You will in time Billy. But for now this land is your home. You will stay here and learn the ways of the Navajo. It is your destiny to become a warrior."

And so here I am, no longer living as the son of a white man. No longer known as William "Billy" Land the Third. From now own I am Billy Badlands son of the Coyote and I am Navajo.

Reading it I felt like it could make a good Twilight Zone episode. Kind of got that Rod Serling kind of mystery to it.
