Big Blue awakening Part 7 by Wayne Clayton

“My God, what have you done to him?” The sight of the young man’s face trapped under the thick glass had momentarily robbed Sam of the pain of the General’s fist.

“You’ve read the file Doctor, this soldier was put on ice in 1945. He has been down here ever since, waiting for this day to come.” The Generals tone was soft and calm and full of regret.

Bit by bit Sam’s medical conditioning was coming back to him. And once more questions filled his head.

“The report said he had been put in a medical coma, but where are the feeding tubes and waste lines?” Sam’s voice was full of urgency as he tried to come to terms with what lay before him.

The General paused before embarking on the facts which had been left out of the medical files. Details which he alone had carried with him since that fateful day
so long ago. In a world which was so very different to that of today.

“The reason that they are no feeding tubes is very simple Doctor. This man has not eaten since June 1944. His last meal consisted of one large rib eye steak, rare and bloody as hell. He washed it down with coke and for desert had apple pie, made just for him and flown in from his favourite dinner. He wiped his mouth with a napkin and left a ten dollar tip”, “Eight hours and fifteen minutes later he went to the can for the last time.”

The General didn’t wait for Sam to ask any question as he ploughed through fact after fact. Just as he had rehearsed to himself over and over since first he had word that Big Blue was to be reactivated.

“All of his eternal organs have been ‘modified’ and ‘reassigned’. What they have been ‘reassigned’ to do is none of your business Doctor. What is your business and the reason that you have been chosen for this mission is that as of precisely 1200 hours today Big Blue is to be re-commissioned for active duty.”

“It is your assignment to evaluate his capacity for his return to active service, and to re-acclimatise him into the modern world.”

“If however his capacity to carry out his duty has been compromised by the period of time he has been in storage then this project will be terminated.”

“Do you have any questions?”

Sam glanced once more at the face beneath the glass.

“Just what do you mean by ‘Terminated’ General?”

Sam could see the General stiffen at the question, although he knew that the General was fully aware that Sam already knew the answer. But he wanted to hear it from the General himself.

“Doctor,” The Generals voice once more fell into a hushed tone. “You as a medical man I’m sure see before you an ordinary man, but let me tell you that this is diffidently not an ordinary man. He was once, but now he is a Weapon. As sure as a tank or, a gun is a weapon. If this weapon, God forbid goes off half cocked then it’s up to you to make the final call.”

The Generals eyes flicked up towards the ceiling. And Sam’s followed. Above them he noticed for the first time a large round hatch directly above the bomb housing. Around the hinges were a line of explosive bolts all linked in sequence to several wires. Sam followed the trail of crisscrossing leads back to a large red button housed in a metal enclosure fronted by glass.

“Any sign of trouble, and believe me you’ll know what trouble looks like. Then you will, I repeat, will press that button”

“And what happens if I don’t?”

The General stared directly into Sam eyes and laid his hand firmly on his shoulder.

“Press that button and it’ll be like throwing a match into a pail of water. Don’t and that match is going to burn like nothing you’ve ever seen before, and you’ll burn right along with it”
