BIG BLUE AWAKENINGS PART 2  by Wayne Clayton

It had only been a couple of hours since his meeting with General V. Layton and already he regretted his choice of study. Sam Orton had returned to his apartment to find it empty. All his worldly goods were sitting in a removal van parked outside. All neatly labelled with army like precision. He hoped they could tell him where he was heading, but the tags only had the address of a storage company somewhere on the other side of town.

The only thing left in his apartment was the phone. He thought it best to notify the University that he wasn’t going to make it in tomorrow. But as it turned out the University already had been informed and wished him luck in his new position of  Head of Psychology  at the  Manhattan Project School of Applied Physics and Arts.
Sam wondered if they even checked it existed.

As for informing his family that wasn’t a problem. And for Sam that was something that left him cold. The sad truth was he was going to blink out of existence and nobody was going to miss him. His only monument would be the papers he had written. And he couldn’t be sure that the General hadn’t already snuck into the University  library and  smuggled them out under his hat.

Forty-five minutes later he was boarding a private jet. The General was already on board sitting behind a exact replica  of his desk back at the Pentagon. On the wall behind him hung the Presidents, all except Carter and Clinton. Their places were filled with a photo of the General himself and General Patton. Sam took his seat opposite the General and glance out of the small window down into the countryside far below. Watching the red dusty school yard baseball diamonds fade into the clouds.
He now knew how Charlie Brown felt stood out on the pitchers mound with the rain coming down.

“Doctor Orton…” The General spoke without even looking at Sam.

“…In the case in front of you, you’ll find all the relevant details of the mission. May I remind you that this is a matter of National Security and you will not divulge any of the information therein contained relating to Big Blue.”

Sam looked at the thin black case before him. Once opened he would be forever it’s prisoner. He took one last look out of the window, catching the last reflection of himself as a free man. Then let his thumbs press against the catches and released the genie from the bottle.
