It was bound to happen. Alicia and Mike have to leave Saint Katherine's Bay and move back out to San Bandidas, CA to take care of their sick mother. I understand family comes first but I thought me and Jess was a part of that family or at least that they were now a part of ours.
This leaves the Night Hawks a member short. I guess Jess and I will just have to carry it alone. This is our city after all. We will protect it from all enemies no matter the cost. It's what our father would have wanted us to do. Oh yes I haven't forgotten my oath to find his killer. But that trail has gone cold. I've beaten down every thug I've come across to no avail. I'll just have to settle with beating down more until none are left that stand in the way of justice.
At least Mike helped outfit this abandoned clock tower to become our new HQ before he left. Jess has named this place, "The Hawk's Nest". It has a nice ring to it I suppose. It's time I went out on patrol. Jess isn't here yet but she can always catch up later.
As I put on the suit I think back to the first time Mike showed it to me. And I remember thinking "does he seriously expect me to wear this get up, I mean come on who wears a cape nowadays?" But I have to admit this suit has come in pretty handy. The extra protection it has built in has allowed me to go toe to toe with those stronger than me and still live to tell about it.
So I pull on the mask and buckle the armored gauntlets around my wrists. Firing off my left grappler I swing out of the window and into the night. My mask automatically switches to night-vison mode to compensate for the pitchblack night. The street lamps down below only throw out brief patches of light to disperse the shadows.
Hardly anyone out and about tonight. Just the occasional straggler rushing to get indoors someplace warm. The homeless huddling close around fires built in old oil drums. And then I see it. Some punk beating on an old couple demanding their wallets.
As I land nearby I smile to myself as the punk's shocked face registers his impending doom. My wrist blades are extended, merely for effect. I wouldn't actually use them on someone this under armed. He drops the switchblade knife he'd been holding and he turns to flee.
That's when I say it "there's nowhere you can hide from Shadow Hawk!"
This causes him to pause for an instant and then he darts down a side street. I give chase. The agility enhancers in the suit doing their job allowing me to move like an athlete. As I close the distant I fire off one of the shurikens from my gauntlet as a warning. It harmlessly imbeds itself in a tree just to the punk's left.
It does what its supposed to, it causes him to give up running. When I catch up to him I slug him in the jaw just for the heck of it. Well maybe it was for making me have to chase him.
Then I tie him to the tree and leave a little note for the police. Afterwards I back track to where it started, planning on verifying the old couple was okay. They were gone by the time I got there. They probably took off as soon as we were out of sight.
Fear causes people to flee more often that not. I can't really blame them, though without them to make a statement to the cops the punk will probably be back out on the street by morning.
Is this really all my life has become? Swinging through the city beating down punks just to sit back and watch them go right back to breaking the law? Something has to change and soon!
What's that buzzing in my ear? Oh yeah my communicator, it must be Jess.
"What's up sis?"
"Car jacking on Third & Main. The police are in pursuit but there are hostages involved. I'll meet you there."
"On my way" is my reply.
I didn't choose this life. It chose me the moment my father was murdered. And now it has consumed my sister as well. __________________
