Lionsgate 's comic book adaptation "The Spirit," opened at No. 9 with $6.5 million for the weekend and $10.4 million for the four-day period this Christmas season. I think it would have done better opening in February that's when movies like Daredevil opened with like 5-6 times that amount.
Maybe Christmas day wasn't the best choice for this type of film. It's like Prince Caspian opened in the summer when it clearly should have opened for the Christmas season.

It's opening in England on 1st Jan. It's had quite a bit of hype judging by the number of posters I've seen for it. I plan to see it just out of curiousity. I did see some youtube comicbook reviewers slating the trailer months back saying it was too like Sin City visually. But that doesn't put me off, as in his comics he works in black n white so way should he change his sytle just because it's a film. It's how the story works which will be the greater test.

I wouldn't be surprised if the film did better overseas. A lot of films have not made enough here in the states to be considered big hits but when the amount made around the world was figured in they looked like hits financially for the studios.
