Having read the first four issue arc of this series, I was immediately drawn to it. There was a unique look and fresh element to it. So I bought the first volume, and it's one of the best books I've EVER read.
Plot: Invincible is the alias of one Mark Grayson. He;s just recieved his powers in his Senior year of high school. He gets his powers from his father, Omni-Man who is from the planet Viltrum. He has powers including super-speed, fight, and super-strength. Invincible's mother is only human, and the three live a reasonably normal life.
Art: The art is brilliantly simple and graphic, with bold strokes and coloring that is bright and (for lack of a better word) fruity. This is actually a plus, and even makes Invincible's yellow costume look cool. When violence ensues, it's that much dakrer due to the light nature of the coloring.
Overall: Robert Kirkman's scripts provide a fluency that would make Brian Bendis proud (and does, he writes the foreword). In the style of Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man, witty dialogue and action are the basis for this great series. It's hard to wirte much wihtout giving away the brilliant twists and turns that ensue about midway through the volume. Seriously, the twists would shock M. Night Shymalan into retriement. Plots are revealed, seeds to new ones are planted, and the reader can't put down the book. The humor is also excellent as Kirkman makes fun of himslef and makes many references to the rest of the comics world. For instance, a seasoned comci reader will be able to see homages to infamous characters Rorschach form Watchmen, Deena Pilgrim and Christian Walker from Powers, the Justice League, and many mroe I have forgotten since my read. Few books can make me laugh out loud, gasp (ok, I didn't really gasp out loud, but my mind did!), all the while thrilling you with amazing visuals and romantic intrigue.
This is one of the best books I've ever read, any fan of comics should give this book a chance. It's vital you start with vol.1 though, and don't flip through the pages ahead, you might ruin some of the classic twists.
5 out of 5.
