Here is the final chapter in DOJ Volume 1. After the move I will start the series up again, probably under a new title. Anyways read on and enjoy.
Firefox finally tracks down Franklin Harrier on the Master Manipulator’s orders. As she slowly comes up behind the mafia boss she ignites her whole body with flame. Frank turns as he smells the smoke from her body and smiles.
“About time someone arrived. Has the Master Manipulator’s plan succeeded yet or do I need to remain hidden a while longer?”
“His plans are about to be realized. He sends you his regards” with that she hurls a ball of fire at Franklin Harrier which engulfs him in an instant.
He screams in agony as the flames consume him, turning him into nothing more than a charbroiled corpse. Firefox uses the surrounding flames to raise the temperature enough to fly and she turns toward Sentinel Tower to rejoin Locust.
Meanwhile at Sentinel Tower…
An insect swarm works its way through the ventilation system overrunning the entire facility in moments. As the heroes swatted the bugs realization dawned on their faces as to the cause of the infestation. Bombshell activated the automated defense system and watched as all the ventilation shafts closed trapping some of the creatures inside them while keeping more from being able to infiltrate their headquarters.
“At least we only have to deal with these that already made it through” Crimson Shield said with a grim look on his face.
Horus called upon his powers and caused a group of the insects to burst into flames incinerating them at once. Sphinx struck out time and again with his sword, each time slicing one of the locusts in half. Bombshell herself drained some of the energy from the tower’s reserves and simply blasted them into oblivion.
Ghost Ninja used her chain-whip to stab even more of them turning them into shish kabob “where is the vile creature that sent these grasshoppers against us?”
“Hopefully stuck outside” Bombshell replied “but one of us needs to get out there and take him down.”
Ghost Ninja took that as her cue and she phased her body so that should pass through the solid building walls. Once outside she turned invisible so as not to alert Locust to her presence. She found him and Firefox outside in debate over what they should do.
“Master Manipulator told us not to take on the heroes, until he and Dark Eagle arrived” Firefox argued.
“But what is taking them so long? If we wait much longer the heroes will attack us anyway. My insects can’t keep them trapped forever!”
“Maybe you need better subjects Insect Lord” she said with contempt in her voice.
“How dare you woman! No one speaks to Locust like that!”
He took to the air and came down slamming his fist into her face. She burst into flames at the last second scorching his hand as it connected sending them both reeling in pain.
Elsewhere…
Harbinger has managed to find the remaining two power swords. Combined with the other seven he now has the power of the Cadamarian gods and the swords have complete control over his mind! He creates a path of destruction in every town he comes across as he makes his way back to Wayward City with only one thing on his mind, destroy the heroes!
As he comes closer he notices the two villains battling outside of Sentinel Tower and smiles. He would use them for his attack. Flying low he comes within shouting distance.
“Locust, Firefox stop that fighting at once and join me in a battle against the heroes!”
Ghost Ninja hears this and quietly returns to report back “Harbinger has returned and has just offered to team up with Locust and Firefox in order to take us on!”
“What, how could he? Has he turned traitor” Crimson Shield asked?
“No matter we will take him down with them if we have too” Bombshell answered as she headed for the stairwell.
The heroes made their way outside for what would be their final confrontation as a team, though they did not know that yet they each felt as though this was the end of an era. Bombshell was outside first and she opened fire on the group before they could seek cover.
Crimson Shield came out next flying at full speed to deliver a haymaker to his one time ally Harbinger. The winged warrior’s armor protected him from the blow and he swung his mighty war hammer in retaliation. Crimson Shield deflected it with his power shield and kicked out with his feet connecting with Harbinger’s chest.
Harbinger let out a wolf’s howl as his bloodlust grew and he swung his hammer again connecting it with Crimson Shield’s shoulder. The pain was great but the hero struck back again and pummeled his opponent.
Ghost Ninja and Sphinx confronted Locust with their weapons drawn. The Insect Lord started shrinking until he was the size of one of his pets and got lost in the crowd. Ghost Ninja turned invisible and snaked her way through the swarm looking for Locust.
Horus and Bombshell went toe to toe with Firefox. She unleashed a stream of fire at the duo and Bombshell absorbed the energy as quickly as she could. Horus then summoned his gravitational powers to grab the fiery villain and slam her into a wall. Bombshell unleashed the flame back on Firefox in the form of an energy wall that slammed the villainous between it and the real wall she was currently against.
Firefox screamed as her bones began to break under the pressure of the attack until finally she passed out from the pain. Horus then changed form to that of a falcon and took to the skies trying to reach the battle raging between the Crimson Shield and Harbinger.
Bombshell joined in the battle against Locust by obliterating the remainder of his insect horde leaving the Insect Lord with nowhere to hide. In frustration he grew back to normal size and punched Sphinx in the shoulder. The Egyptian’s quick reflexes allowed him to move enough that the blow was only a glancing one.
Ghost Ninja lashed out with her chain-whip slashing Locust across the left thigh. Bombshell then hit him with an energy punch causing him to reel back in pain. Sphinx finished the fight with a swing of his sickle sword, striking Locust across the right arm rendering it useless.
Once Horus arrived in the sky he changed back to his falcon headed human form, using his control over gravity he remained hovering in the air as he unleashed a stream of heat as his right eye blazed to life. The unexpected assault caught Harbinger off guard and he stopped his attack on Crimson Shield. This gave the patriotic hero a chance to catch his breath and deliver a super strong punch to Harbinger’s wrists causing him to lose his grip on the swords.
All nine swords of power slipped from his grasp and separated as they did so. Each one changed back to their normal sword form and scattered across the pavement. The instantaneous release of the power tore Harbinger apart, literally. The wolf form, cybernetic armor, and wings each tore their way out of his body while all of his elemental powers were unleashed at the same moment. The result was an explosion of body parts followed by a loud boom as if a cannonball was fired.
Epilogue…
“In light of recent events surrounding the members of the Superhuman Defense League, congress has unanimously voted to suspend the team’s activities and ban them from congregating on American Soil” and anchorwoman announced on the news.
Orion Smith turned off the TV. screen and turned to his teammates “well I guess that’s it for us. We’re lucky they didn’t lock us away in that detention facility.”
“We can’t help that Harbinger went mad with power or that the mafia caused so much damage” Ghost Ninja added “I can’t believe we’re the ones being punished.”
“Your country just needs time to cool off” Horus said “the rest of the world still needs us, however, I and Sphinx must return to Egypt we have duties there that have been neglected as of late.”
“Then there is no longer a place for me here” Bombshell said sadly “I just wish there was a way for me to return home and see if anything has changed.”
“Perhaps there is” Horus replied “your body absorbs energy right? Maybe if I summon my solar and lunar powers at once it would be enough to allow you to open a temporal rift.”
With that he summoned both powers and sent them straight into Bombshell. As her body absorbed the energy it began to glow and what only could be described as a time portal opened and sucked her through it. With any luck it took her back to the future from whence she came.
“Horus” Ghost Ninja asked in awe of his power “now that Bombshell is gone and the government no longer wants us would it be okay if I accompanied you to Egypt?”
“Yes I would like to join you as well” Crimson Shield chimed in “I mean it is only fair that we repay you for coming to our aid.”
