“Mark I need back up fast” John Dark shouted “Voltage is down and I am being overrun by these reptiles!”
“The others are occupied elsewhere right now John. Hang in there I’ll see what I can do!”
Mark Watson aka Mainframe went to work on the keyboard activating the Sentinel Tower’s automated defense systems. Then he rushed to the armory and grabbed his prototype “Cyber Soldier” suit that has yet to be tested.
“Guess now is as good a time as any” he said to himself as he pulled on the suit. Strapping the gadget belt in place he finally put on the new Optic Visor he had invented.
Typing some keys on the control pad imbedded in his left gauntlet he brought the systems online and fired up the propulsion system in his boots and jetted out of the hanger. He brought up the scanners in his visor and calculated the distance to Saint Katherine’s Bay and adjusted his controls for the best possible combination of fuel efficiency and airspeed.
Fifteen minutes later he arrived on scene to see Midnight wielding what appeared to be a sword. Mainframe landed nearby and activated his EM field generator to deflect incoming fire. Then he scanned the area with his visor flipping from thermal, to night-vision, and even into x-ray modes to find every possible hiding space for the enemy.
Midnight had unstrapped Vorpal from his back and held it in front of him. The Black Adder unleashed a fireball in his direction but the sword seemed to act of its own accord sending a gust of wind to catch the fire and throw it back at her. She screamed when her robes caught on fire and she dropped to the ground, rolling around trying to put it out.
Lady Hydra had since recovered and joined in the battle. Summoning her water magic and focusing it through her bracelets she sent a tidal wave hurtling towards Midnight. Mainframe fire a blast of energy from his visor, targeting her bracelets, and the blast hit its destination.
The bracelets unlatched from the Lady Hydra’s wrists and dropped to the ground. Mainframe fired off a second shot striking her in the chest as she reached for her bracelets. The blast knocked her off her feet and sent her flying into a nearby parked car. The car alarm went off with an annoying wail.
Queen Medusa joined the fray and began shouting orders to the gorgon warriors. Then she summoned her own magic, that of the earth, and sent slabs of concrete shooting up from the road and hurtling toward the two heroes. Midnight was hit in the head by a piece nearly as large as he was. Vorpal fell from his hands and clattered on the ground.
Mainframe managed to use his speed enhancing boots to dodge the first wave of stone and began firing his energy blasts in random patterns to shatter the much bigger pieces before they could do any major damage. He then saw a sword lying on the ground where the Lady Hydra’s bracelets had fell. He rushed over and retrieved it then he dove behind a low lying wall on the opposite side of the street in order to catch his breath.
Voltage thunder punched his way out from underneath the wall that had fallen on him and rejoined the fight. He saw the snake warriors surrounding Midnight’s lifeless body and Mainframe pinned down behind a low wall. He shook with rage and unleashed a thunderbolt into the nearest warrior. The lightning struck him and then jumped to the next warrior, then the next chaining them all together with electricity until all the gorgon warriors were lying on the ground convulsing in pain.
Queen Medusa herself was the only one left standing and she was now backed into a corner. The two leaders squared off as if it was high noon in an old western.
“Stand down villain!”
“No one orders Queen Medusa around” she hissed manically “if you run away now I may let you live foolish mortal!”
“Medusa huh, as in I’ll turn you to stone?”
“Something like that” she hissed again as she summoned two stone golems from the earth and sent the automations charging toward Voltage.
He quickly teleported out of the way of the first rock monster and slammed his electrically charged fist into the other one. The golem was unfazed by the attack and backhanded Voltage sending him halfway down the block.
“The creatures are completely grounded, my electricity has no effect. What can I do against these monsters?”
Meanwhile Mainframe held the sword in his hands. The sword changed back into the bracelets and latched onto his arms. He felt the magic flow through him immediately. He surveyed the situation and unleashed a torrent of water at the nearest of the golems.
The water blast through the monster, easily eroding its body until the left over pieces simply fell apart. Medusa saw this and let out a maddening scream. She directed the other golem to destroy Mainframe while she herself grabbed Voltage’s attention.
“Gaze into my eyes hero and see the horror that awaits you” she hissed.
The trance took hold almost immediately and Hercules Cole tried to break free. His body wouldn’t respond, his eyes were frozen open. Then it happened, his body changed, stiffened. It was as if he was carved out of marble. His body was now immobilized in the stance that he had taken when the gaze took hold. His arms were thrown up in front of his face as if to shield him from the magic.
Voltage could still sense things going on around him but he could not move, could not speak, could not do anything but stare in the direction he was facing. Then he felt his heart stop beating as it too was turned to stone.
Mainframe finished off the other golem and then gazed in horror at the scene before him. The gorgons had scattered! Midnight appeared to be dead and Voltage stood still, unmoving.
“My god, what has happened here?” __________________
