The Dark Knight Sets New Midnight Record!
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures
July 18, 2008

Just past the stroke of midnight, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight broke the record for a 12:01 a.m. film opening, earning an unprecedented $18,489,000 at the box office, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. That total does not include the grosses from the subsequent 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. showings.

The 12:01 a.m. grosses soared past the previous record of $16.9 million, which had been held by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith since May of 2005. The Dark Knight also surpassed Warner Bros. Pictures' own studio record for midnight showings, previously held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, "We have been thrilled by the response to 'The Dark Knight,' first from the critics and now from audiences. From our earliest screenings, the buzz on the film has been white hot and it hasn't let up. Now that the opening weekend is here, we are very excited to finally share 'The Dark Knight' with moviegoers nationwide."

Well after last nite, I can see why it made so much. I was not going to say it, but after 2.5 hours of sitting in a drive in, I have to.

I was very impressed with Ledger's last performance. He was NOT the laughing, maniacal clown with exploding playing cards, acid spewing flowers and the constant bad puns, but he still remained the psychopathic monster the Joker is.

Ledger pulled off one scary ass Joker.  Deliberate, cold blooded, without any remorse whatsoever. Master manipulator, without fear of anyone.

I have to say that he pulled the rug out from under Bale and stole the spotlight.

I have to ask out of curiosity. Do you think Ledger would have received so much attention as the Joker had he not passed away so tragically?

I haven't seen the movie yet. Going to wait for the crowd to thin out.

You know I do firmly believe that a hero is only as good the villain he must confront.

Good question. No answer for it. I really never liked the guy, and with that other controversial movie he did a couple of years back, I liked him even less.

This might have really put him over the top though. As I said earlier, he is scary as hell as the Joker.

Not really.  Ledger was awesome as the joker, but death has a funny way of magnifying any situation.  His death not only made this movie more anticipated, but in a way, but put the spotlight on him.

i disagree, i'm sure there will be some more ticket sales from peolpe just wanting to see his last performance, but their was serious hype among co-stars even before his death.  the performance has also elevated to oscar worthy and no sympathy there.  critics and people alike agree it his performance is spectacualr all other things forgotten.  also he's playing one of the most loved villains in movie history, that alone brings hype.  and finally, ledger was so good that not once in the movie do you even recognize the character as being tied to ledger in any way, even when his make-ups off.  ledger wasn't there, the joker was the only one in the room.
