I hesitate to mention this. After all I created a political site reallypolitical.com to mention things of this nature, but I really want as many reasonable and sensitive minded folks to be weary of the new movie Golden Compass especially when it comes to bringing children to view this picture.
It's a pretty clear case of propaganda designed to reach the hearts and minds of children. The kids are always the targets. After all get the kids, and you have the next generation.
The goal of the picture is to promote hate toward Christianity and God himself.
The movie is based on 3 books from author Philip Pullman who is a atheist activist. His books basically kill God in the end, and he makes no apologies for his ant-Christian storylines.
"If there is a God and he is as the Christians describe him, then he deserves to be put down and rebelled against," Pullman told the Telegraph newspaper in 2002.
While the movie is said to have toned down the anti-religion retoric, Pullman is on record saying he hopes this movie is successful so the rest of the trilogy can be made with more of the anti-religios content included.
To discuss this movie
http://reallypolitical.com/article305.htm
Yahoo movies in an interview with Daniel Craig says the James Bond, Golden Compass actor has said
Quote: A fan of the books, Craig always saw himself playing the explorer Lord Asriel. As with Bond, the role will probably mean having to commit to more films, because "Northern Lights" is the first installment in a trilogy.
"On a completely selfish level ... I would really like to continue telling this story," he said.
Pullman fans are concerned that the Hollywood version has watered down the theme of religion, while a U.S. Catholic group has called for a boycott of "The Golden Compass," fearing it will attract young readers to books it says are anti-Christian.
Craig defended the film, which also features Nicole Kidman.
"I think it does stand up. It's an incredibly enjoyable couple of hours."
But he would have welcomed the inclusion of more overt religious content.
"I wish there was, because I think the debate that Philip Pullman raises is incredibly healthy," he said.
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20071129/119635386200.html
Now keep in mind this is the same guy that said he would like to kiss a guy in a James Bond movie. I didn't believe it myself till I did a few searches a while back.
There's too many movies out this holiday season that look to be a lot more entertaining to even bother with this propaganda piece. Take your kids to something fun like the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie.
I'm looking forward to seeing Will Smith's movie "I Am Legend" about the last man on the earth.
Also the Nicolas Cage movie the next National Treasure hunt movie should be a lot of fun.
Better yet stay home and rent out Surf's Up I bought it, and it's just a lot of fun to watch. It does what a cartoon is supposed to do. It makes you laugh. It's a whole lot more fun than the Happy Feet movie. Should have been called Depress Me Feet.

It's fiction. Unfortunately many people take fiction seriously these days...
People should be able to say what they want as long as it doesn't *directly* put down anyone else. __________________

It may be fiction but it still is being hateful, it does directly put people down because it basically kills other people's God and religion. __________________

Rather it's the book or movie it's still very bad to write about killing God, the author must be Muslim or like a Muslim, I hope that the books and movie get banned. __________________

He's not a muslim he's an atheist (which is alot worse in my opinion). There is no reason to sterotype muslims that way. I'm not a muslim myself I'm a simple country boy baptist but I agree with Lectrohm I would have to actually see it to pass judgement. Not going to see it just saying. __________________"Beware villains for it is Midnight!"

Myself and other Catholics don't need to read the book or see the movies to pass judgment on it, if there's anything against God/Catholicism/Christianity we don't like it. __________________

I find that very deragatory to muslims. Tim, this is just as bad as the "gay" statements on the other site. Please remove/edit this.
Quote: Myself and other Catholics don't need to read the book or see the movies to pass judgment on it
So you read a synopsis. Ok that gives a generalization. But you can't just, right off the bat say something is bad especially if you yourself haven't seen it yet! Now it is true that there seems to be a lot of controversy at first about this film, but until you or anyone sees it, they can't talk about it in a negative fashion. I know many christians, (the majority of my friends are) who disagree with the bible, church, even god. Like that one guy said (paraphrasing) "In every culture, religion, or group, there will always be those who agree and disagree. It's human nature." This basically means that in any group there will be always be those who have different opinions there is NO group in history that had the support of everyone in it. For instance I can think of quite a few muslims who have helped me out more times then naught, and then there are the "radicals" who take everything literally--but I won't go into that.
Just please trust me on this if nothing else Mannino. You are probably right about it but until you see it yourself it'd be best if everyone here did not talk about it, this is a happy site. As for myself I think the only thing about the movie that's worth 9 1/2 bucks is the special effects. So I'll be waiting till it comes out on DVD.
-----
Now Tim, I've respect you greatly, you're fair to everyone (even those who are obvious trouble makers), and I realize you are a strong christian in which you believe this is right and I respect that. But I do think you should add a line or something along the lines of
"This is soley my opinion and what has been said by the (writers, producers, etc) I recommend you see the movie first and decide you're opinion first and whether or not you want your children to see it."
Not that exactly of course but something similar. Anyways I'd like to get back to happier stuff, it's almost the holidays and I love this season
Don't forget to check out thr RoL Board before New years for the Holiday special of RoL. __________________

I think I failed to really make the point I wanted to make I guess about the movie. If you were to go see the movie you might not really think of it as being that bad as the movie makers have said it's been watered down.
My point is the author created the books as much more hateful toward God and Christians than should be accepted and than what is actually in this first movie, and if this movie does well he has stated he wants to bring that same kind of anti-God feeling to the next movie.
I'm just hoping that knowing this, people will steer clear of it as there are so many other much more positive and just plain fun movies to go see this season.
The facts I've presented about this movie are not in dispute by the writer of the book or those involved with the movie. He is an unshamed atheist who wants to turn the minds of kids against Christianity. I suppose he had a bad childhood or something. I don't know. See, the danger of the movie is not as much the content of this first one as what they plan on doing the next time once they've sucked kids into this storyline. Plus on top of that kids are liable to get into reading the books.
I encourage everyone to skip this movie. That's my feeling. You aren't going to see anything that bad or controversial in this one. It's just part of hooking an audience for the books and the next two sequels that I hope never get made. Kids will read those books and their parents will most likely never even know what's in them.
This movie has nothing to do with Muslims. Muslims would not make a anti-God movie. That whole conversation should be saved for my political site as to what I believe in my opinion radical muslims might do etc. But anti-God films is not on the list at all.
I was wondering if I should have said anything here, but at the same time I thought this movie might appeal to sci-fi types like myself and I figured everyone ought to know what is in the works with this before they waste their money.
In short, go see Alvin and the Chipmunks or Will Smith's movie. That's probably what I'm going to see this month.
Nuff said.

Recently I've heard that the writer of Harry Potter has in the past said some negative remarks about Jesus Christ, but I'm not sure that shows up in the books. Usually though a person's attitudes and beliefs wind up in their work one way or the other.
I didn't think the movies in and of themselves were that bad, but I am surprised at the author revealing one of the characters was gay after all this time. Heard it on Fox news. Just weird to announce that for a supposedly kids movie and book series. People are using kids entertainment to make leftists political statements now. I hate that. Kids movies should be fun and entertaining. If there is any hidden messages let it be stuff like, do your homework, brush your teeth, drink milk, stay off drugs, and be nice to animals.

Yeah I read the harry potter books myself and nothing even in there suggested the character was gay. It was pointless to say he was after the fact. Maybe that's why she killed him off in the series __________________"Beware villains for it is Midnight!"

Yeah it made no sense to call him gay when he died in book 6. This came out after book 7 which is the last book so at this point does it really make a difference to say oh yeah he was gay? Maybe the brits have a different take on it I don't know. But reading the books all I saw was an old wizard who was more focused on his job and helping out the young wizards rather than pursuing any sort of social life. So just because he was lonely that didn't jump up and shout HE'S GAY!!! __________________"Beware villains for it is Midnight!"

Yeah, there's a lot of dudes that can't get dates. Doesn't mean they are gay or something. Otherwise everybody that's too ugly or geeky to get dates would by default be gay.

dude he wa slike a professor X character so into his career he never got married. she put NO eveidence of dumbledore being gay in the books and she had seven chances. so for her to say he's gay now that all the children's sales have been made is just a way for her to get all the gya people to buy her book. basically, she's being retarded. __________________"You...complete me."

Compass has started of slow making less than expectations and is being panned by critics as well.
Looks like an apparent bomb.

Tim, The reasons you give for NOT seeing this movie are the very reasons I think people should see it.
Perhaps it is anti-religion propaganda aimed at kids, but kids are so afflicted with pro-religion propaganda that they don't have a chance to grow up and think clearly about the subject. And clear thinking is a major item on the incredibly short list of things I find absolutely sacred.
I'm surrounded by people who are so brainwashed that religion is a good thing -- even a necessity to be a good person -- that they can't even conceive of the idea that religion might not be good, that God itself might not be all good and kind and loving.
Not only can they not think of the idea, they become irrationally angry when they encounter someone else who brings up the idea, and that probably includes some of what was said here. And years of religious upbringing, education, and --yes-- propaganda have even trained these people to feel guilty and sinful for even asking certain questions.
More important than being pro- or anti-religion, people have to be able to face ANY concept and examine it logically, without their thoughts being filtered by emotional reactions or automatic responses trained into since childhood. Daniel Craig summed it up nicely when he said, "the debate that Philip Pullman raises is incredibly healthy."
Beyond all of this, it is simply hypocritical to speak against a movie you haven't seen for yourself. __________________Human stupidity is my kryptonite.

Quote: Beyond all of this, it is simply hypocritical to speak against a movie you haven't seen for yourself.
Well no, not really remember I wrote that the movie was watered down according to the articles I've read. I could watch the movie and that wouldn't change the background behind it which are three books that are written exclusively for the purpose of slamming God and religion as according the author himself. He's unapologetic in his position against Christianity. I just think my fellow Christians would want to avoid contributing to this man's cause for one. Second I think it's kind of underhanded for something to be aimed at children with this kind of controversial theme.
So in short it's not just this movie in and of itself. The plan is for sequels that conform to the anti-religious nature of the books once they get kids suckered into it. So I think people should be made aware of the bigger picture. All I'm doing is passing along information.
Quote: they become irrationally angry when they encounter someone else who brings up the idea, and that probably includes some of what was said here. Don't worry. I won't become angry about discussing religion or even questioning it. I just don't like the idea of someone brainwashing kids. I like kids entertainment to be just that...entertainment. No need for hidden agendas.

I don't either, but that included pro-religion brain-washing too. Whether it's a version of Christianity or one of the others, there are loads of movies that want to brainwash the viewers toward their point of view. Even It's a Wonderful Life talks about angels as if they really exist. I see the existence of a kids movie to seem anti-god as just one small step toward balancing the incredibly one-sided scales.
Ironically, as I type this, "somebody"'s Zazzle products are scrolling across the bottom of this screen, and one of them states quite boldly that "There is no Good without God." See! The brain-washing for the other side is everywhere! It's so ubiquitous that most people don't even think of it as brain-washing anymore. __________________Human stupidity is my kryptonite.

Well that would be my fault.
Let's just say it all depends on your world view. If you believe like I do that God is good then you aren't going to see a problem telling people so. On the other hand someone saying that God is hateful and mean is like someone talking about your best friend. That's the best way I know to describe it.
If you want to discuss this in depth I think we should probably do it on my http://reallypolitical.com/ site. I made it because from time to time subjects come up that get serious enough to change the friendly tone of my comic book sites. Not saying I think your tone is bad. Just that eventually people tend to get mad on religion and politics, and I'd rather set aside such debates to one site so to keep a happy atmosphere here for those that would rather not get into it. You know.
Also I'd like to say, I've debated these kinds of things a lot on that site. Also please note that if this subject is the kind that really offends you then I would probably think it best we forget about it.
I'd rather be friends and just agree to disagree if it means getting into a big fight with someone. I've gotten a little shell shocked from previous debates. I don't want to make any enemies.

I'll check out that other site, but to tell the truth I've already said more about this than I want to.
But I probably owe you an apology. I get a bit touchy and irrationally sensitive about people equating God with goodness because I'm so sick of be told that I must be immoral or unethical because I don't believe in anything supernatural like God, angels, etc. To tell the truth, I have a stricter moral code than most people seem to, and I'm the only person I know who can even talk about "honour" with a straight face, so be accused of being incapable of being "good" is really irritating.
But, for what it's worth, you're cool with me, and I'd rather be friends too. __________________Human stupidity is my kryptonite.
