"Disclaimer the first paragraph is rated PG-13 for some sensual imagination"

High atop the water tower a shadowy being looks out over his city, searching for the maniacal golems that had invaded it just hours ago before sunset. The Midnight Avenger’s night vision was usually enough to help him find his prey but tonight he could not find them at all. Maybe they had went underground? He switched his vision powers to thermal but still could not find the forms he wanted. A couple in a nearby apartment building was embraced in throes of passion. He watched them a moment longer than he should have. It had been such a long time since he had felt the touch of a woman like that.

Enough of those thoughts, he chose his life of solitude or rather it chose him. His father was killed doing this same job. And John Dark the Third would not let his father’s death be in vain! He would continue his nightly vigil until this city was no longer immersed in sin.

The golems’ trail had gone cold. If he hadn’t already been tangling with his long time nemesis Desert Eagle he might have picked up the trail shortly after their arrival. There was no help for it now he would just have to do his best and hope it was good enough. For if he didn’t find them and put a stop to it, Midnight knew the government would get involved and then all hell would break loose.

Elsewhere in the city…

Robertson Granger, better known now as Bob the cyborg, worked his way into the warehouse district. He was glad to have found a raggedly old coat along the way for he wasn’t receiving as many stares as he thought he would otherwise. The rugged warehouse workers lifted heavy boxes with their hands and large crates using robots with ropes and hooks attached to their large arms. How is it in this world man and machine live together in harmony? Why could it not be that way in his own universe?

“Hey buddy you’re not allowed in here” one of the workers said as they approached him “you’ll have to find shelter somewhere else.”

“I do not seek shelter” Bob replied confused “I am looking for you laboratory to acquire some spare parts.”

Thinking the homeless looking man was crazy the worker spoke again “look man we don’t want trouble but you have to leave now.”

“But I need to find your technology! Just tell me where it is please!”

“Okay man we warned you” the foreman said “get’em boys.”

The workers grabbed crowbars and loose chains and advanced on Bob. The cyborg shed the coat and the worker’s paused but only a moment. The foreman swung his crowbar toward the cyborg’s head. Bob caught it in his cybernetic hand and jerked it from the foreman’s own hand. Then he slammed into the side of the man’s temple putting him down fast. A chain wrapped around his legs and a worker yanked it hard. Bob lost his balance.

Once the cyborg was down the workers piled on him each pounding away at him with a different weapon. They beat him till he was unconscious and his cybernetic parts were mangled. His organic parts bruised, bones broken they left him for dead.

Robertson Granger awoke strapped to a cold metal table, men and women in white lab coats standing over him. The nearest one had a pair of pliers in his hand.

{my tribute to the Six Million Dollar Man}
“We can rebuild him, we have the technology” one of the women said.

“Yes but at what cost doctor?”

The cyborg passed out again and did not awake until they were done operating on him. His cybernetics looked as new as the first time they were put on him. He scanned the room but no one was around. He tested the metal clamps around his wrists and legs. They were strong but he was stronger. He broke free and unhooked the wires attached to various parts of his body. An alarm started blaring almost instantly.

Guards came rushing into the room trailed by the doctor and her assistant. Bob looked around and decided he did not want to hurt the ones who repaired him so he just stood still. One of the guards secured him to the table again as the doctor came over to him.

“Calm down we won’t hurt you” she said in a soothing voice.

“I know that is why I let you restrain me” Bob replied “where am I?”
