Issue#3:”Happyness”

20 hours before the trip to the moon
Joe: “Natalie Anne May, will you marry me?”
Natalie looked at Joe in aw. She didn’t know what to say. She was stunned. Natalie had her hand over her heart gazing at the ring and Joe. He kneeled there on the ground, with a smile on his face, waiting for an answer. Everybody (even the waiters and a couple chefs) was staring at the couple. Natalie stared right in Joe’s eyes, as did he.
Natalie: ”Oh yes! Yes I will!”
Everybody in the restaurant stood up and clapped for them. Joe put the ring on her finger, stood up and hugged her. She hugged him back. Then he gave her a kiss. The manager was there, listening to it all. He walked over to Joe and Natalie. He had a very curly black mustache.
Manager: ”I am so glad for you two. (He had a very strong Italian accent). Now that you are engaged dinner is on me!”
Joe: “Oh sir you really don’t have to—“
Manager: “No let me. I insist.”
Joe: “That is very generous of you Mr…. (Joe looked at the manager’s nametag) …Luigi.”
Mr. Luigi: “You two are very welcome!”
After the manager left Joe and Natalie finished eating. When they were done they went outside. Then Joe walked Natalie home. While the two walked they talked.
Natalie: “Oh Joe, this ring is absolutely beautiful. Is it made of diamond?”
Joe: “Nope. Don’t you know your own birthstone? It’s emerald.
Natalie: “Wow. I can’t believe you got me this beautiful emerald ring.”
Joe: “I know. I can’t believe I found one.”
Natalie: “What do you mean?”
Joe: “I was looking for an emerald ring for almost 1 month. I wanted to get you a very special ring.”
Natalie: “Oh my, that’s probably the best thing anyone has ever done for me. You’re so sweet Joe.”
Joe: “Thank you Natalie.”
The two walked the rest of the way talking. When they reached Natalie’s house they went in and watched a movie. Natalie fell asleep on Joe’s lap. Joe took Natalie to her bed and tucked her under the sheets. Joe wrote a note that said:
‘Sorry I had to leave but I had to get some sleep. I’m going to the moon in less than a day. You are welcome to come to the station if you want. They know who you are, so they’ll let you in. Hope to see you tomorrow. Love you very much.’
‘ Love, Joe’
He put a glass of cold water on her nightstand. He put the note next to the water. Then he kissed her on her forehead. Joe walked out of the room closing the door.
3 hours before the trip to the moon
That morning Joe woke up at 9:00 a.m. He got dressed and ate some pancakes. After he ate, he walked outside to his car. He ran into Natalie.
Joe: “What are you doing here?”
Natalie: “I just thought I would stop by and say hello.”
Joe: “Are you going to come to the station? If you are, I could give you a ride there.”
Natalie: “I know. I was going to go by myself, but I would rather go with my astronaut fiancé.”
So they got into Joe’s new Chrysler and drove off to the station. They got to the station about 20 minutes later.
Fred: “Hey Joe. How you doing? Hi Natalie.”
Joe: “Hey Fred.”
Natalie: “Hi Fred.”
Joe: “Fred I have to tell you something. Do you remember last night when I told you about the date being special? Well I proposed to Natalie and she said yes. Now we’re engaged.”
Fred: “That’s great Joe! Can I have everybody’s attention please? (Fred stands on his chair for the big announcement). You all know Joe right? (Everybody nods) Well, last night he got engaged to Miss Natalie right here.”
Everybody clapped and cheered for them. Joe and Natalie walked around the room thanking everyone while they were being congratulated. Joe had to leave the room to get ready for the trip.
45 minutes before the trip to the moon
Natalie: “Are you ready Joe?”
Joe walked out of the room and in front of Natalie.
Joe: “Yeah, I’m ready.”
Natalie: “Oh I’m so happy for you. I’m going to miss you so much. I can’t wait until you get back sweetie.”
Joe: “I know. I’m going to miss you too. I’m glad we’re engaged”
Natalie gave Joe a kiss. He gave her one too. Then the two walked outside to meet Fred.
23 minutes before the trip to the moon.
Fred: “Hey Joe. You have to get on the shuttle in 16 minutes.”
Joe, Natalie, and Fred talked a little about the trip. Then they talked about the engagement and more.
12 minutes before the trip to the moon
Beep, Beep! Fred’s watch alarm goes off.
Fred: “Sorry Joe, but you got to get on the ship.”
Natalie: “Good bye Joe. I’ll miss you. I love you.”
Joe: “Good bye Natalie. I’ll miss you too. I love you.”
Then Joe and Natalie kissed each other and walked their separate ways. Joe got in his captain chair in the shuttle and put his helmet on. Natalie followed Fred to his office. Fred put on his headset and tested it. The headset made a static sound: ‘--zzt,zzt—“
Fred:--zzt—“Joe can you hear me?”
Joe: “Yeah I can hear you.”
Fred: “Get ready Joe. We’re getting ready to blast off.”
Fred signaled some men to start the engine.
Fred: “Here you go Joe. I’ll see you in a few weeks. Blast off in t minus 10 seconds. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, ……”
Joe and Natalie were both nervous. Joe was thinking about Natalie the whole time. She was thinking about him too.
Fred: “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF!”
