I was looking for some info on Johnny Depp as the Riddler and found this.
Johnny Depp is tipped to play Batman villain The Riddler in the next installment of the comic book movie series.
according to the National Enquirer, studio bosses also want Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman onboard to play another of the Caped Crusader's arch-foe, the Penguin.
A source tells the Enquirer, "(Producers) are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own.
"And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman."

I'll be honest I'm not that crazy about the Penguin. I actually hate the Penguin. I hope this Riddler is better than Jim Carrey's version. Reminds me of Batman Forever when the heroes were the only characters I liked. The villains were terrible. Batman Returns wasn't as good as Batman to me just because of the Penguin. He's a short fat slob. How does a fat slob give Batman a hard time?
and then there's this bit of news
Then there are rumors that Angelina Jolie is being tapped to play Catwoman, which makes sense since she's already got a tiger tattooed on her back.

I think Bale would go for more of an unknown. Look at Batman,Scarecrow and Joker. All played by good but not big,big box office stars. I bet he'll go for more of an fringe film actor.

Okay, I'm confused. I assumed from the title of the first one, BATMAN BEGINS, that Bale's was supposed to be the younger version of the guy played by Keaton, Kilmer, and (shudder...) Clooney. If that's so, then we've already seen how both The Penguin and The Riddler both began and ended their criminal careers. But now we're supposed to believe that Batman faced both of them when he was younger AND that they came back later with a different story?
This is what I hate most about comic books: no internal consistency.

I think Batman Begins just completely reboots the whole Batman series of movies. After all Batman the movie with Jack Nicholson showed us one Joker's origin involving Batman, while Ledger's origin had nothing to do with Batman. At least we didn't see it anyway.

Yeah, that's true. So even the use of The Joker in these movies isn't consistent, even if it was one Hell of a performance. I'm seriously hoping that Ledger gets a best actor nomination for that, and I'm not saying that because he's dead and it was his last performance. He just completely embodied a character that was so different from himself.
Anyway, back to the movies together, I agree that it's probably a "reboot." I hate reboots. I like to see characters grow and change overtime, and that's impossible if a director can just come in and say "Those other movies never happened." I can appreciate that they all want to tell their version of the story, but to just toss out someone else's work seem cheap.

I'm glad of a reboot. If he didn't we'd be on villians like Shame and King Tut.

Depp could play him if they didn't have the Riddler.
As much as I loved the Adam West Batman show as a kid I'd like to see some more modern violent characters added from the comics and get away from the usual Batman TV characters. Clayface could be a great monstrous threat. Get some characters that use guns, monsters, etc. The whole, "riddle me this Batman" thing belongs on cartoons.
