Fans of the latest animated TV take on the G.I. Joe franchise--the anime-styled Sigma 6 series--will find both familiar sights and brand-new experiences in this 90-minutes feature film. In a nutshell, First Strike takes the first five episodes of the series and completely revamps the storyline; team leader Duke is now a fresh recruit who must assemble a Joe team (who sport Sigma suits, the latest in body armor) and battle the forces of Cobra. First Strike also posits the curious idea that the two previous direct-to-DVD Joe releases (2003's Spy Troops: The Movie and 2004's Valor vs. Venom) happened some 20 years before the events that take place in this feature. The result may be somewhat confusing to longtime Joe followers and those who are following the new Sigma 6 series, but thankfully, the action by which the Joe name has earned its stripes is plentiful here. And the disc's supplemental features offer more thrills for the Joe enthusiast, including the storyboard for the pilot episode, a featurette on Sigma 6, and artwork for the mega-popular character Snake Eyes, along with his Cobra nemeses. --Paul Gaita
